1973 220 W114

Hello Friends,

I am going to show some ignorance here... I tried a quick search on the site and did not see anything come up. I didn't think that MB made a 220 in 73 but I have been told someone has one. Is this possible? I thought they switched to the 230 with the w114? Sorry if this is a stupid question.....

Actually, 6 cylinders are W114, all others are W115. M-B made a 230 4 cylinder in 1973- 74, and a 220 4 also. They're great cars and have Stromberg side draft carburetors. I've had both a 220 and a 230.

MB made the W115-220 from 1968 to 1973.

So the general consensus is that there is no such thing as a W114 220? That is what I was thinking too, but I am looking at a MB (just puictures, haven't seen it in person) that does look like a W114, but the seller insists that it is a 220 and that it is "very rare"....

I've never seen a W114 with a 2.2L from Mercedes but that being said I dropped a 2.2 into my wife's '72 250C and I seriously doubt anyone can tell it wasn't the original engine. Every thing bolted up with the exception of the power steering lines and the exhaust header pipe. The PS lines was due to differences in years and the engine coming from a sedan to a coupe. Of course it was a complete drive train swap so I don't know whether the bell housings would interchange.

Mike, I agree that a convincing swap could have taken place. I think that may be what happened.

Some time ago I saw an actual 220 for sale ( I believe a '72) with a 230 engine, this was a test car so to speak before MB released the 230 (in '73?, don't quote me), but it was badged as a 220. Supposedly one of only 12 or whatever that exsisted. That scenario makes sense to me, and I guess I could see it working the other way, rather than test the new engine in an old body style, test the old engine in a new body style.

Is this a test mule perhaps that escaped from the factory?

Surest way to tell. Run the V.I.N. through the Classics center. They'll tell you everything there is to know about the original vehicle.
