NE 1 From England ???

I'm into classic Mercedes in a big way and really appreciate the wealth of infomation available on this site. I wanted to find out how many members we have from England as I'd like to arrange a regular meet.

Currently I own Two 280SE 1971 and 1970, two 280CE 1973 and 1974, a 230E 1984 and have had a number of the the saloon 114/115 variants.

Regards,

Vick

Vick,

Welcome to the forum. You might want to post this question in the Open Forum, because while there are quite a few folks from England, I don't recall any who are regularly in the Oldies section. You will get much greater response and possibly even set up a meet by posting there.

Thanks Mike will do.

Any ideas with the timing on a 114 280CE ?
I've just rebuilt the head and set the timing to 0|0 on the bottom pulley and I was able to start the engine but it was lumpy. I was then told to set it to 13 degrees to the right of the 0|0 mark and it ran much better like that. I then set the timing using the timing light and used the little tac on the pulley which is set to 15 degrees to the right.
The car runs better but the mixture is still rich. I've tried adjusting the switch on the brain box located near the passenger footwell but it doesn't really do much and neither does the adjustment screw on the inlet manifold.

The EFI system in your car has been a frequent topic of conversation. The D-Jet, or D-Jetronic system was used in the 250E, 280se 3.5/4.5, 300sel 3.5/4.5, 350sl/450sl and 350se/450se until 1975.

Check the archives for posts on those cars and/or those keywords.

There is an M110 engine manual out there that has the system fairly well described. There are also several versions that don't. You want a book that contains section 7.4.

To your specific question, that knob only affects how long the pulses to the injectors last, so the effect is a minor on one fuel. A much greater impact is all the extra sensors, especially the manifold pressure sensor. Check the hose to it VERY, VERY carefuly. Check the vacuum system in general for leaks. There must be none.

lastly, I have a 1.2mb .zip file of some of the manual pages for diagnosis of the system. drop me an email and I'll reply to it with the file.

NE1 from England - Yes!

I would recommend that you join the Mercedes Benz Owners Club in the UK. They cater for all sorts of cars from pre-war to present day. Call Vic Harris, Membership Services, on +44 (0)20 8482 4892 and tell him Peter Sutherland told you.
Good luck.

Another Brit

Welcome Vick, yes there are a few of us Brits on this forum, but I think some of them might be a bit shy!If you want to meet other Merc owners Peter's suggestion is a good idea.Being a member of the aforementioned club has definate advantages. They also have regular meets in Epping,Maidenhead,Canterbury and Bletchingly and that's just the southern region. There is a joining fee of £5 plus £30 annual membership. As it's the oldest Mercedes club it celebrates it's 50th anniversary this year so there's a big meet at Donington this year which should be a crack.
I hope you get some more replies, you might have more luck posting a thread in Open Discussion.I'm over near Bexleyheath:-Bear

Thanks guys,
Im actually a member of the Mercedes-Benz Owner's Club in the Uk and no doubt like yourselves I really look forward to the Gazette, some of the cars I see for sale in there are unbelievable and the infomation is great.
As far as the weekly/fortnightly meets go my local meets are not happening at the moment as one of the organisers has suffered a berievement.

As far as the trouble shooting on the 280CE is going I noticed that the air pressure line was taped up so no doubt it must have been leaking at some point so I'll replace that this weekend. I drove the car to my gym round the corner and when I parked it up it soon gathered a crowd which put a smile on my face but Im still not happy about the noisy tappets. I have adjusted them several times but this doesn't really help and Im considering changing the followers and the disks that sit on the valves.
Any ideas ?

another limey!!!

I am another MB fan from the UK (Oxfordshire) and would also be interested in meeting up. I visit quite a few classic car shows and am often disappointed at the lack of Mercs. I currently own two 114's a 250ce which I'm restoring and a 280ce which is currently being broken. I also have a very rusty '77 280ce and a good '83 230ce which I use as my daily transport.

If anyone is interested in meeting up, drop a line. I have quite a few spares for 114's and 123's and would be interested in some kind of swap type thing.
