1974 280C oil leak below carb
OK, I have a small pool of oil collecting in a circular recess that is machined into the block casting. Its just in front of and below the carb. Any ideas what the cause might be?
Pics attached

Cause? I'm guessing there's a leak.
Might be hard to tell exactly where it is coming from if someone "cleaned" the engine with a quick wipe before you got it. Soak it all up with a paper towel, spritz the area lightly with degreaser, wipe up well, then observe for new seepage or source of leak. Could likely be the cam cover gasket leaking or (less likely) head gasket weeping in that area. Look around too for small external oil bypass lines (not sure if you specific one has these). Some engines have them attached with banjo bolts and they deliver oil to different areas via small pipes, vs internal channels/galleries.
