71 280SE problem, help!

My 280SE 3.5 V8 is super, with only 80k on the clock. I have had it 6 months & have a problem that local Irish dealers have no clue about.

From a standstill the engine won't pick up. In neutral it revs OK, but in gear ( auto ) it will take 100yds at walking pace before really going, especially when cold in the morning. Sometimes the engine dies altogether when put in gear

This is a bit hairy when pulling out from a junction.

Any bright ideas ?

Thanks in advance

I am far, far, far from being an authority on these cars. But, I have a 4.5 that was doing a very similar thing and after 40 hours of trouble shooting it turned out to be the "brain box". Is your car "bogging down" in drive? Is there a large amount of black smoke pouring out of the tail pipe? My car was dumping so much fuel it washed the rings and filled the oil pan with fuel!

Thanks Clunker,

yes my car feels bogged down, but no black smoke, just white smoke when cold.

Thanks

Your symtoms sound like a combination of lack of fuel and lack of timing (probably timing). Be sure that the timing is at least 10 deg BTDC with the vacuum lines DISconnected and plugged. This is not the way MB would say but their method leads to your problem. They would wish you to set timing with the lines connected at 5deg ATDC, BUT they expect vacuum in the lines and they expect the vac unit to work fully and they expect the A/C to be off (A/C on and the vacuum is OFF). SOOO.. the easiest method is to test the total advance with the lines off. If you are still less than zero with the lines off then this will be a large part of the problem.
