WTB: 1968 Mercedes Benz 230 Fintail Fuel Tank
Hello everyone. I recently purchased a 1968 Mercedes Benz 230 Fintail. Just found out that the gas tank is corroded and needed to be replaced. Does anyone have a spare gas tank to sell? Pls let me know.
Thank you.. |

I suspect a tank from any fintail sedan would fit. Someone with access to the EPC could verify this.

Aren't gasoline '68's 114 models?
Adsitco shows the same number for all gasoline '68-'73 fuel tanks--I've got one from a '73 280 Tim Kraakevik kraakevik@voyager.net Four 114's, Four M110's |

There were some W110 and W111 fintails made in January and February of 1968. I owned a 1968 W110 fintail.

The W110 chassis uses a fuel tank that starts with a 108 part number, so one from a W108 may work, however, looking up the W108 chassis, it shows they use ones with a 109 part number... they look the same, but it appears that the W110 tanks hold 65 liters, while the W108 tanks hold 82 liters.
It looks like they use the same mounting locations, but I'd make sure that there is enough room in there for it to fit widthwise and that the filler neck is the same. Proceed with caution, and it may work... but I think that at the least it may be a larger capacity tank.

Your best bet would be getting a tank, sending unit, and mounting hardware from a W111 or W110 donor. As long as you get these components matched from the same donor car, it should fit and work just fine.

The model year in Germany starts in August or September, and my understanding was that the 1968 model year Finnies were built in the first couple months of the '68 model year; E.G. in late 1967.

Just for closure, the fuel tank part number for a 230S is A1084700301. It is 65 liters. It is available new at the dealer for around $1,500.
It is odd that it has a A108.... part number, as the usage table contains only W110 and W111 chassis!

The German market seemed to get the new models early (they had the W126 in 1980, but we had to wait until 1981). There were indeed several W110 and W111 chassis cars with build dates as late as February 1968.

True....my 1968 250SL was built in the third week of July 1967...it is one of the first built for the 1968 model year.
