Radio Wiring 280SE 4.5

I've decided to replace the Becker Europa since it will cut out for no apparent reason and I have an Aiwa CD unit. I've also read posts regarding the cutting up of the orignal harness being a bad thing, so what would be the alternative? Run new wiring? There seems to be an amp box of some sort, what is this and should it be kept or done away with?

The radio wiring for these Beckers is very simple. Here's the outline:

1. Black wire, bullet type connector, that's your power.

2. Black wire with eyelet screwed into chassis of radio, that's ground.

3. Thick grey cable running from radio chassis to amplifier, simply unplug at amplifier.

4. Antenna cable, unplug from radio

5. Speaker connection (spade type) on amplifier box, unplug that too.

Pull out the radio and the amp and wire the new one in accordingly. But save the original equipment (and the amplifier bracket), because you may want to return it to original some day, or else have the radio tuned up by Becker of N. America.

With your advice in mind I accomplished the installation today with the only tampering with orignal wiring being the removal of a two millimeter section of insulation on the power wire of the glove box light switch (done inside the connector cover) for a constant power source. The rest of the connections were done with bullet connectors onto the orignal male studs. The front speaker wires were taped off and new speaker wires soldered onto the speakers. These were then wired into the new harness. Restoration would be a snap and in the mean time the CD player rocks! New speakers are next on the list.
