W110 W115 ENGINE INTERCHANGE.
hey guys i just bought a 76 240D for the engine. i have a 66 w110 200D. i thought it would be a direct swap because they are both the older style engines..
the engine in my fintail is a 621.. the 240D engine is a 616.916. i see the oil filters are both below the car but my fintail points back towards the driver. the 240d has it pointed towards the front of the car. can anyone help me figure this out. i really want to drop this engine in and drive it but im not sure if it will clear the front cross member.. NOTE this is not a 616 from a w123 with the bypass filter setup

I don't have a definitive answer, but I'm in a similar situation. I'm in the process of replacing a 621 with a 616.916 also, but mine is going into a ponton. Where is the oil filter on your fintail 621? Mine is at the back of the engine. The 616.916 oil filter housing is much further forward than the one on the ponton 621 engine. Does your 621 have the filter at the back?
For me, the 616.916 oil filter housing has to go because it wants to be where the steering box is on my ponton. My solution is to remote mount the filter, but I haven't gotten around to that part of the project yet. I've got the pieces, I just need to find some time to work on it. Another possibility is to block off the holes in the 616.916 block for the oil filter and drill out the necessary holes to mount the 621 filter on the 616 block. The block has the oil passages and could be machined to accept the 621 filter assembly. I decided to use a remote mount setup because it allows me to use a spin-on filter and I can use an oil cooler like the 616 had originally. I know that doesn't really answer your question. You should be able to take some measurements and see how far forward the 616 filter is relative to the 621 filter. The nice thing about these swaps is how similar the 621/615/616/617 blocks are to each other, not to mention that the gas versions. I'm actually using an m121 ponton gas engine oil pan on the 616 and it's a direct fit (except for the dipstick tube which hits the injection pump). |

i think it will fit because the cross member and front suspension is the same on both cars. double A arm. unlike the w123 cars

The oil filter will hit the crossmember on a W110 and prevent the W115 engine from going in. I got around this issue by using an oil filter housing from a 230 and spacers under the engine mounts to lift it a little. The car has been running well for 10+ years this way. But a remote oil filter is by far the best option.

i have done this too. my W110 Station wagon had a 615-912 220D engine in it when I bought it.
i swapped in a 615 240D from a W115 (80,000 miles from new) . The Main thing is to get the correct left hand mount arm which snakes around the oil filter and sits the engine at the correct height . My filter cleared on both engines with plenty of room. These are not a common part . I used a W108 6 cylinder shock mount on the left side chassis extension (same as a W108) with a W115's engine damper to the engines damper mount under the crank pulley. trans is the W115's automatic and this bolted in using a W108 rear crossmember and a shortened front drive shaft. The car came with a fourspeed but that wasn't really what i wanted so the shaft was longer and the tunnel had been butchered to fit a gear shift. I have reused this but may changer it later. here are pics of this project to date. https://plus.google.com/photos/116046874571116258862/albums/5682968881881922113 heres a left hand engine mount to fit the later engine into a W110. |
