What's the difference between a 240d and a 220d Injection Pump?

Hi All,

I was just wondering if anyone can tell me if an injection pump off a 240 diesel will work on a 220d? What's the difference? Is it just a calibration difference or are there parts the the 240 pump that are larger? There is a 240d in the junk yard that I'd like to take the pump off of if it will work for a 220d. Thanks.

Sven

Or are the pumps essentially the same and it's the size of the injector that matters?

The 240D pump pumps more diesel into the engine. The 220D is always has a pneumatic governor, while the 240D can have a pneumatic governor, depending on model/year.

Thanks Govert.

The one in the junk yard does have a pneumatic governor and is $79 but if it won't work for the 220 I won't bother. I've got my injection pump freed up but the rack still has more resistance than it should so I was looking for a cheap alternative. I will put my pump back in on Sunday and see if it works. I'm not sure the diaphragm and spring will have enough force to move the rack properly, but we'll see. Thanks again.

240D W115?

Junkscouts-
The IPs in early 240Ds had their own oil supply (what you need), whereas the later 240Ds were plumbed into the car oil supply. So from my perspective, it would only be a feasible option if you found an early w115 240D IP. If your candidate IP does have its own oil supply, I would be willing to bet it would work. There is an adjustment on these IPs where you can back off on the max injected quantity of fuel. Assuming that adjustment has a 10% adjustment capacity, I bet it would work just fine.

Overall, it will attach fine to the engine, it will not hurt the engine, but you might get a little more black smoke if you are unable to de-rate the IP a little.

On an slightly related note, I checked my IP diaphragm today with a mityvac and surprisingly it actually is holding a vacuum. So my loping idle problem is not a leaky IP. Onto the next possibility.
