Which alternator to replace a generator?
Hello,
I've read all the threads on doing an generator/regulator to alternator with integral regulator conversion pages and it seems like an easy job. The charging system on my '63 220s is giving me problems. The first time it happened I removed the generator, cleaned it and put it back. It worked so it must have been a lose wire. The second time the idiot light came on very bright and then went out and has not come back on. The lightbulb is still good. The multitester shows the battery is good but no juice comes out of the generator. I don't know how to test the regulator. So I thought it would just be easier to put in an alternator. But I can't find the alternator that will go in with the minimum of fuss. Can one of you recommend which alternator with integral regulator I should buy? Thank you for your advice, David |

Get one from a later mercedes ,up to 1990. you will need to modify the generator mount slightly so the lower alternator mount points fit the generators bracket .Make sure the grooves for the belt line up properly .
To hook it up,you connect the large wire for the genrator to the power connection on the genrator. the thin blue wire is for the dash bulb so connect tat to the same connection on the alternator . At the regulator ,keep the blue wire which is now conected to the alternator. the main feed from the regualtor which powers the car must be connected to the battery main feed ( on the starter motor) . the brown ground wires can be taped off. |

Thanks for the help. First thing is to see if the brushes are the problem. They are more than 50% gone but there was no evidence of arcing. New ones arrive in the mail Monday. If it works, I'll remember this advice for the next time.
