w115 help
hello everyone, i am in need of some assistance so i came here. i have a w115 240d that has the oil filter housing in the middle of the block, but since the block was no good we got a 220d block. now the problem is the oil filter housing is not in the middle like previous, it now is located at the back of the block and hits the steering head. is there any adapters that fix this problem? or any thing i can do to fix this? thank you in advance.

You'll probably have to find a block with the filter in the location you need.
The other block is undoubtably for a different chassis so someone will need it.

filtering is oil in and oil out, I guess one could run extension lines, but it would be a serious retrofit with a lot of head scratching...

If you are happy with the new block then see if you can remote mount a filter.
Diesels have big oil filters so there are plenty of tractor filters out there. See if you can remove the filter can from the engine and then find a tractor dealer than can help you out with making hoses for a remote filter mounting. You would be converting to a screw on filter, but at least you could put it where you wanted it to be. You could even mount it close to the front of the car near the oil cooler. Just make sure it was away from the fan. |

I could be wrong, but I think 220D had manual steering and 240D had power. How much farther in do you need to go when the filter hits?

With such a major difference I am concerned that there are other differences in the block he has not yet discovered.
Remote filters give me the willies.

It must be a 220D block from the W123 or perhaps from a van.
I think the oil filter can be moved, but the original opening must be blocked off and new holes have to be drilled. |

I'd be less wary about the remote filter than about the 10% less HP and torque. Personally I'd be looking for something else, like a 300D N/A. It's a much closer match, plus the extra cylinder will really help the car get up to speed with not much more fuel consumption (possibly less, if you consider you don't need to flog it 100% of the time, only 80% ).

Sounds like you have a 123 220D block.
This block should still have the mounting surface for the 115 oil filter. If so, drill the holes for the 115 filter head and plate the rear filter mound off. Using a naked 220 block to build a 240 engine will give you much bigger problems then moving the oil filter.
