1968 230 Starter removal

Anyone know how to remove a starter on a 1968 230?

I had everthing off at one point but the top bolt. Seems impossible to break the nut on the top bolt. Even broke a crows foot with a breaker bar that shouldnt be possible. I'm pulling towards the passenger side.

Lift up the carpet on the trans tunnel and you should find an access panel to reach the upper starter bolt

Crawl under the car towards the back of the transmission and look forward. You'll see that you have an unobstructed view of that bolt. The idea is to use a long extension rod and a socket on a swivel.

Mine (1972 250, w114) was damn near impossible to remove. I pulled the carpet etc. back and there was no access panel that many suggested was supposed to be there. The long extension with a swivel was the only way to access it and that proved very difficult. I ended up pulling the exhaust off to get better access. Even then I destroyed two 3/8 inch drive swivels and twisted/destroyed one 3/8 inch extension. I was eventually able to get it using 1/2 inch drive from one end to the other. Very frustrating

Good luck!

W110/ 111 sedans had the access, later cars did not. Yes, they are a pain!

If they are allen screws holding the starter (not sure about your car), then here is a trick I learned while changing the starter on my w123. Get an allen wrench of the appropriate size (L style), and cut about 1 inch off the end. Seat the cut-off in the bolt and use a box, open end, or ratchet wrench on the piece from above in the engine compartment.

Found the acess panel and finally got the starter out. Tested the starter myself and took it to Autozone, Murrrays and Advance. All signs pointed to the starting being good. So not sure what the problem is at this point. Now trying to put it back in which is also next to impossible. It is really a 2 person job one wrench on the inside and the other in the engine compartment. However, having a difficult time with 2 people. I thought about removing and reversing the direction of the bolt, so the allen side is in the engine compartment and the nut side is on the inside of the car.
