What Went Under The Engine?
I brought this up on a couple of lists but have not yet received a helpful answer. A couple of weeks ago, I had the car up on a lift and noticed that there were a series of bolt holes (probably 12-13mm?) encircling the engine area on the underside of the car in a "U" shape; with the bottom of the U facing the rear of the car. There clearly used to be something mounted there as the underside had little rectangular contact areas where the bolts met with the "mounts" of whatever is missing. My guess is that it was some sort of protective shroud that covered the oil pan area but then that would interfere with oil pan drainage (as opposed to oil plug) if one was so inclined. It obviously does not appear to be critical to engine performance given that I apparently have driven it that way for some time. I looked at the parts book and do not see anything that might be the part - any ideas?
Second follow up question: anyone have a parts number and place to purchase this mystery part? Thanks, Peter Kaufman 130 engine (I believe)

Mercedes offered optional 'belly pans' for some of the cars in the '50s and '60s for use on poor or unpaved road conditions. I have a detailed installation described in my 1959 factory 190 service manual. I'm not sure about the 111 chassis or post '60s cars.
Happy Motoring Mark
