1979 300td transmission problems when warm?

Hello -

I've got a 722.118 transmission on a 1/79 300TD, driven and maintained it myself for 5 years. I've never learned a thing about the transmission or had to until now. I spent the night reading all about the vacuum system only to discover this morning that this transmission, of course, is not related to the vacuum.

The problem is that for the first 10km's or so the car drives normally. Then it rev's high and won't upshift (from 2nd to 3rd?). Occasionally I can let off on the accelerator and it will shift up but mostly if I drive above 60km/hour it will rev too high and then start bumping or jerking until I let off and drive home slowly in 2nd.

The transmission fluid looks and smells fine. I cleaned the contacts on the kickdown switch. I'm going back now to take a look at the throttle linkage. I'd like to know how to make adjustments or what next steps to take here in figuring this out. I searched all the threads I could find but I'm still not confident in what to do.

Over the past five years, the transmission would "slip" occasionally when cold (get into 3rd then rev up suddenly with no power). This happened rarely but it's probably related. The last mechanic in California has my haynes and another one is on the way.

I am an amateur but have a keen interest and a lot of tools, so i'll put your advise to good use.

Thanks,

Meredith

Well, I'm at a loss still. I can see that the shift lever that comes out of the transmission on the passenger side connects to a rod that goes into the engine compartment and ends up connected to another arm under the exhaust manifold. The bushing that goes between the lever and the rod close to the transmission is GONE. Could this be my problem? If so, how do I source the bushing and how in the world do i access that spot?

Your friendly neighbourhood MB dealer has the bushing. It is almost certainly the problem.

Perhaps you need to work from underneath the car to change the bushing. Or remove the lever from the transmission.

mine was the linkage, there is a specific process in the service manual , at least it was for my 450

great thanks! It was hard to believe that it could be so simple, now to get in there. I've got a manual, a filter and the bushing on the way, hopefully the right one part #1102770550. The mercedes dealer couldn't find it. He sent four screenshots from his EPC and every part of the shift and throttle linkage was there except for that one bushing and the control rod. I guess I could make something but i'll just wait a few days and get under there once. Thanks for your input.
