I'd just replace the unit with the Pertronix as you were considering. This would eliminate all the guesswork/problems and give you a better system.

Sorry, my British car manual lingo surfaces some time. LT = Low tension = low voltage (12V). HT = high tension = high voltage (40kV).
Go with Petronix. I have it in 2 cars and love it. If you don't have a tach, then get the flamethrower coil too. It totally eliminates the transistor unit. Money well spent in my opinion. Bert

Ditto. Except it's inconvenient to disconnect the unit when I want to leave the ignition on without the engine running. I understand the new design units don't have this problem, however.
