Rough idle checklist

Hi Everyone,

My engine idles pretty rough (particularly when first start up and at stop signs). I am trying to isolate all potential issues:

1. Carb (weber; had them synched/adjusted recently; still rough idle)
2. Distributor Timing
3. Ballast resistor (replaced this; still rough idles)
4. Fuel pump
5. Vac. Leak

Can anyone think of anything else I am missing?

FYI: 1971 Merc 250 (w114)

Thanx

Hi MeltedPanda,

What do you mean by color of plug tips (spark plugs). I replaced them all with platinum tips (however I have heard sparse stories of not using plat). When I got the car, the same platinum tips were in, and the benz seems to run fine (well the same as before I replaced them; ie, rough idle).

I would seek out plugs that cross with the originals, some may disagree but I would not sugget use of Platimum. What I meant by color is color of plugs tip after they have been in car . Dark black would indicate you are running rich , brown- OK , white - too lean, ect

I completely agree. Lose the Platinums and go with a non resistor plug.

My first Mercedes was a 1968 W114.

I put the original head on a block that was supposed to be the same as the one that had thrown a rod through the side of the block. Many, many, many hours and a thousand dollars worth of Webers, were spent trying to smooth the idle.

I eventually gave up and blamed it on the fact that the cam timing was a half tooth off. Probably wasn't the problem but I felt better.

Michael
