Clocking Thermostat

What is the proper way to align the thermostat on a 76 300d w115?. The pictures in my manual are confusing. I now have it aligned with (arrow) pointed to the incoming coolant.

Somewhere along the 360* edge of the t-stat should be a small, probably brass, check valve with a ball bearing in it. That valve should be located at the 12 o'clock position when the t-stat is installed.

Many people pop off the check valve so there is just a small hole and no ball bearing to get stuck and not allow the system to vent. If you pop the valve off the hole should be at 12 o'clock.

12 o'clock meaning pointing to the windshield? My t-stat is dropped in (horizontal) the pictures in my MB manual don't show my config. i don't think I have a euro model as the original owner was a doc in OK City, purchased from dealer. $14K in 1976, such a deal!

By the way, where is Temecula?

OK, clocking would normally apply to a vertically mounted t-stat. Horizontally mounted ones should vent naturally since air rises in liquid. So I'd say clocking is a moot point on your car.

Temecula is on I-15 approximately 65-70 miles north of San Diego, 40 miles or so south of Riverside.
