When I crossed the US via the Death Valley in July 2009, my 3.5 had a 50/50 mixture of MB coolant and water and it was overheating. I swapped to pure water and water wetter and thingss improved dramatically. But my radiator must have been partially clogged by then.

I am about to wash the radiator. The radiator is the culprit. I am pretty sure.
In the end the radiator is the bottle neck... clutch yes, it needs to work sure but won't do the job entirely as it sucks the air through the radiator and the radiator is cooling.. so downstream the radiator is key. Of course there might be some direct cooling at the block from the airstream by the visco fan but...this won't do it.

I just did flushes (radiator only)with alkali solution and acid...both slowly dissolve the debris inside...hopefully.
Maybe I can find muriatic acid somewhere. Then I'll also try this.

Typical symptoms of a blocked radiator is overheating at speeds, typical symptoms of a bad fan clutch is overheating in traffic.

A radiator shop can either boil out or rod the radiator, you can also have the tanks removed and new cores installed on these old radiators which should not cost much.

It is unbelievable what can be done with these old parts. You are saying a radiator shop will solder parts out and new ones in?

I believe both my radiator is bad AND my fan clutch. I'll have it all back in some weeks and can report how things are moving...the temp needle for instance.

Yes, with these old brass radiators, you can remove the tanks and install new cores. Usually for less the $300 at a local radiator shop in the US.
