W115 220/8 Guide Ball Joint Seal
Hi Everyone,
I was crawling around underneath my car making the usual laundry list when I noticed that a guide ball joint seal is cracked and open. I have little experience with this sort of thing so I'm wondering if I should be worried about it, how soon it might need to be replaced, if I should be tending to it in the mean time with grease or oil... what do you think? Any information would be warmly appreciated. |

Trevor:
Upper ball joint boot; if the joint is not yet too loose, you can continue for a while. The joint will need replacement byandby; as suspension work goes, it's one of the easier jobs, no drama. |

Thanks Frank,
This is what I read last night--I was thinking about squirting some grease in there and then dabbing silicone sealant over the crack to keep the road grit out. Everything is super tight with no play--so as you suggested, I think I can get away with it for now. |

A cracked ball joint boot means it's failed, or will fail very very soon. As soon as anything gets in (water, dirt, whatever) it's doomed.

Tom,
Am I doomed even if I get to it before anything gets in there? Or should I go ahead and replace them all around? |
