Those are just the ones he wants to show us in public.

There are hundreds more, hidden away in the secret lair deep within the mountain...

Progress Report

Having some difficulty getting the carbs happy. We'll get there. It's been stalling at traffic lights. A few times but that shouldn't be.

We mounted the Cibie Super Oscars, affixed the rubber hood latches, made prototypes for the center stack and the center driving light mount. We've looked at a number of bracket solutions for the center light and like the factory's recent rally build solution the best. So we'll try and get as close to that as possible...or better.

The Konis on medium are perfect. And we like the Michelin Defenders too. Waiting for my $80.00 rebate card from TireRack.com!

We bought a Sunpro Retro Tach and hope to be able to mount that off center on the steering column. Probably with a custom bracket of some sort. I don't like the idea of drilling a hole in the perfect dash pad!

A cool accessory...

I know it is a rally car or at best a tribute to the great Werks cars, but I couldn't resist purchasing a matched set of German Offenbach luggage from the late 1940s. My rationale is that 300SLs came with fitted luggage from M-B and I saw that M-B offered a set as an accessory for the 230S. The luggage is in near mint condition as they were in the same family since they were new. The dark green leather and polished stainless trim look wonderful in the trunk of the Colonel.

That luggage is magnificent.

Can you give me a ballpark figure on what a set of that luggage would cost?

If you can't find original or if it wasnt made for your model, ask Taris, too: Taris Charysyn & Co. - Custom Fitted Luggage

230S Rally Car

I will definitely read all your project posts with interest. Thank you for taking the time to post them. I suppose you have seen the W111 rally car article in the current issue of [I]The Star, the MBCA magazine.

Daniel Stern is an amazing resource. He helped me locate rare Bosch European-spec headlights for an E500 to retrofit into my W124 E420 (the poor man's E500. daniel has a proper aiming schematic used by the TUV. It works perfectly everytime. You will probably also want to install headlight relays if you put nice, bright bulbs in your car.

Keep the posts coming!

Thanks for your comment. Yes, I read about Randy's car in Star. I love what he has done with his. We aren't going into too many mechanical upgrades and just tuning what the factory blessed it with at birth. Although another gear would be nice!

Daniel Stern has been a great help and we have a box of relays waiting to go in when we start wiring everything up. Today, a replacement fuel pump from M-B Classic to cure an oil leak. And the Cocomats (cocomats.com) arrived yesterday and they fit beautifully.

I hope to get some driving movies on our site soon.

Test Drive Video!

We've been putting easy miles on the Merc as we sort things out. Here's a fun little video using our new Contour in-car camera.

May Update on Rally Tribute

All of the mechanical work was done last month and since then we have just been driving the hell out of it. The suspension is dialed in nicely although my race car buddy thinks I should go full firm on the front Konis. It is beginning to exhibit a slight flat spot at low rpms and we'll have to look into that. It has electronic ignition and new plugs and we thought the Zeniths were finally tuned.

We moved to Rogers Racing's shop for wiring everything up and fabricating a few brackets and the rally dash. We finished the dash yesterday and it is trial-fitted to the car. We like it. The center gauge is an outside temp gauge and the left is a tach. I just don't think I need to constantly look at it since I'll get used to the sound of the engine. And putting it on the column might complicate the column shifter.

We applied to be part of the Greenwich Concours because we thought it would be a fun attraction for the attendees. It is by no means a concours quality car. I guess they agreed so we are in! June 2nd, Greenwich Connecticut. Stop by and say hi.

I was going to column-mount it but decided it would block the speedo too much. I won't be eyeing it for every shift anyway. I'll get used to the sound the engine makes then I'll know when to pull the next gear. Unless that guy in the '64 GTO pulls up next to me at the stoplight...then I'll see if I get rubber in 2nd.

I think that Becker Grand Prix would look a lot better in my 230S. I'll take it off your hands for you. By the way, a column shift 230S is somewhat rare. Cool.
