M115 Engine in Stand -- Please Advise Bolt Size and Location

Hi All,

I've come into an M115 engine that I'm going to keep just to tinker with. I have a 220/8 and I'd like to familiarize myself with the engine while leaving the one in the car (it runs great) alone.

So my questions are:

(1) Where is the best place to mount the attachment plate of the stand? Rear or side? Specific holes?

(2) What size and pitch of bolts will I need for that location? (I know I will have to calculate their length based on the stand)

The stand is just the ubiquitous rolling unit, though an old one made by Ackon Inc. I plan to build an auxiliary support "box" utilizing wedges that will fit under the engine while it is in the stand but not being worked on. The aim is to provide some relief to the stand and peace of mind for me. I'll post pictures of this project if anyone is interested.

Thanks for your advice on the mounting.

For "ease of use" I've always used the end mount style. For any extended amount of storage time I'd use the side mount. What size of bolts and locations are going to depend on the type of attaching plate your stand uses. You want as wide apart as possible attaching mounts to spread the weight distribution equally.

Mike,

Thanks for this. I'll take your advice and mount to the side unless otherwise called for. The engine could be in the stand for a while. Is there anything I should be careful of in this case--other than it falling off, of course?

I'd like to have bolts ready to go when the engine arrives--it sounds like a lot of other MB engines required M10x 1.5 bolts. I'll have these on hand but can anyone else think about bolt and thread sizes that would make sense for a side mount like this?

Cheers.
