Question re failing rubber drive coupling/ water pump
I have a 1968 MB 300SEL Chassis 109015 Inline 6 cyl.
Recently I have had 2 rubber drive couplings fail on me. This is the rubber drive coupling that fits on to the water pump. The first one went a day or two after I replaced my two front belts. On the last repair I noticed that my mechanic had changed one of the new belts electing to go to a slightly longer belt. My question is how are these trwo parts related. I.E. if the previous belt was too small would it have put stress on to the rubber drive coupling causing it to fail? I have been told by some that this is likely. Others are telling me no. The belt drives the regulator which in turn drives the water pump so unlikely that too small of a belt could be the problem. Can anyone provide more info to me on this matter? Thanks in advance.
