1964 Mercedes 190c 110 body type

Hi, I was considering buying an older Benz either gas or diesel for a project car. I saw a 1964 190c on Ebay, that I liked alright. I couldn't find much information about this model, does anybody know anything about it? In fact I don't know much about any of the older styles. My friend has gotten me interested in them however.

Any older models that really stick out with you guys? I wouldn't buy anything on Ebay (Unless I was able to see it in person etc.), but I'm guessing many of us kind of window shop on there!

Thanks!

JJ

Older model MBZ's

In your inquiry as to what might be a good acquisition in the 60's vintage, I would recommend a 1963 or later 220, 250 or 280 111 bodied coupe. They are not as expensive as a cabriolet, have classic lines and appreciate in value.

Yeah. I've been tempted to bid on 5 E-Bay Benzes over the past year but didn't because they were too far away to check them out.
I drove a 1961 'Ponton' 180b (a slower, less powerful version of the 190) for many years.
It was comfortable, reliable but not very exiting to drive. I've owned several vintage Mercedes over the years, including a 1966 230
(same body as the 'finback' 190/200 but with the small six shoehorned in) and my current 1972 250 and 250C and recently acquired 1960 220S 'finback'. (Despite the criticisim these fins have received over the years, I've found them quite usefull - I can see where the rear corners are when I'm backing up!) The '50s cars have a more classic 'look' and more lavish leather and wood interiors but their more primitive brakes and chassis may not be up to modern traffic conditions.
If you're looking for a '60s finback project car, I recommend one of the '63 to '67 carbureted 220S/230S cars with front disc brakes, power steering and a manual floor-shift. The four cylinder cars are decent drivers but lack the power and smoothness of the straight sixes.
Rust is a problem on all these cars so try to get the best condition body you can find.
Also affecting your project choice - is it going to be a show-car or a driver? Do you expect to sell for a profit when your project is finished? Most of the coupes and convertibles are desireable now so don't expect a bargain price on one of these unless it has some major rust or flaws. For example, there was a 230SL roadster mentioned on this forum that had a replacement 220SE sedan engine and there's a 220SE coupe, now on E-Bay, with a carbureted engine installed - all of the SEs should be fuel injected!
The smaller body '70s cars are probably the most practical for daily driving with better brakes and suspensions, more optional equipment, not to mention better parts availibility but they lack the distinctive styling of the older cars. Good luck.

Happy Motoring, Mark

Thanks for your replies. If I were to buy one, it would just be for me to play with, fix up as much as possible (Time permitting) and making it a "weekend" driver. I never gave much thought to anything older than a 240d up until lately, but I've started cruising around Ebay, and now I'm thinking older. But I worry a bit on parts being available to some extent. I appreciate all your input, especially since I'm a newbie to the older cars. JJ

Jason,
Many mechanical parts are still availible for the '60s cars. The sheet metal, chrome and interior parts are getting harder to find, though they do turn up on E-Bay, if you're patient. I've been told, by someone who recycles vintage Mercedes, that some chrome / trim parts are still availible from Mercedes - for a price. He said that a new tail-light lens, from Mercedes, for my '60 220S was $800! I found a 'new-old stock' lens on E-Bay for $85. So while it's good to find a car that's in as good a shape as possible, don't be scared off from getting a fun project if it doesn't need to be your main transportation. My 220S is an excellent driver but the body and interior has suffered over 42 years so I'm going to pick up good used parts as they come up for sale in my price range.

Happy Motoring, Mark

Parts supplies on the 180/190 is pretty good, since many of the parts are shared with the 190SL. And you can buy ANY part for a 190SL. If I were going to do this, I think I'd either go with something VERY classic (like maybe a 170...), or a 220 as suggested above. But, realistically, you would be better off sinking your money into an SL. Either a 190 or 230/250/280. It will cost you a bit up front, but at that point the additional investments you make (in time and money) will be towards a more saleable - and fun - car. The market for 180/190 driver sedans isn't very hot...

For instance, if you bought a 190 sedan for $2000, and put 10K into it, it's worth, what, maybe $5,000? If you did the same with a 230SL, you might buy one for $15K, put 10K into it and have a $20-22K car and have a LOT more fun! And you might actually be able to sell it if you get tired of it or need the money.

Hey Jason:

Afraid I have to agree with Gregg Bambo on this one... The 111 style coupes will probobly appreciate in value, and they're still relatively easy to work on... I'll try to find a photo of an older 190 to send to you...

see ya,

Fred

I Love My Finny!!

The Diesel is not to bad, loud and slow but I drive mine all over and I get more looks from the people on the road than I do with my 280. Parts are available for most anything on the w110 and w111. I agree they are not the most bang for the buck on value but sure are fun to drive
I am picking up a 83 300sd today and 62 180c in the next week! Help me! I can't stop buying Benz’s
Regards,
Bryan

Bryan,
Is that '62 180c a 'ponton' body? I have a '61 180b that needs restoration but I've never seen a 180c, only seen the model listed someplaces. I agree I get more attention in
'Miss Daisy' my 1960 220S finback than in my 'new' 1972 250, but I can definitly tell it's not a diesel!

Mark,

It Turns out that it wasn't a 180C

Its is a 62 300D!

It is pretty rough! lotsa rust!! but is mostly complete and the engine is free.
The guy that has it is willing to part with it for $500.00
If I bring this one home it is sure to be the end of my marriage!
what do you think?

I'm going to take some photos of it and post them on my site soon.

Regards,
Bryan

Hey Bryan,
You NEED that 300C, then I have a 180b you might be interested in!
Old cars are better than being hooked on drugs and booze, and when you're fooling around with your projects, your wife always knows where you are (and not off fooling around with someone else!).
Of course it helps to have a 'garage' like Jay Lenos'.

wait a sec... A 300d or a 300se ? They are very different cars. Both are worth money. One's worth a lot more. You cannot afford to fix either one. But if the car is toast, you can sell off the parts. Hand the guy 300$ in cash for it.
