I just bit the bullet and purchased a lovely 69 280SL, auto. There are a lot of miles on it (167k) but the car has been well maintained and looks new.

What should I know that I don't know? Looking for those nuggets of knowledge that you gain only from living the pain or previous mistakes....all help appreciated!

Don't know what type of info you are fishing for. First, 180K miles is not high millage for a car like this. These are fun cars to drive so plan on driving it with the top down and enjoy it. My other comments would be to first replace all of the hydraulic brake lines out of principle; flush with new fluid. In fact, flush and replace all fluids; radiator, transmission and rear end. Check the tires, old tires mean problems. Many 113 people run 205/70 14 Michlen MXV's. A large tire modern radial tire that tends to keep the RPM's down at crusing speed. If you have specific questions, just post them.

Michilin now has an original Euro tire demension for the 113's.
It is a 195-R-14 with the Euro profile of 80%. It is called "Rain Forest" and I have
gone with a set with great satisfaction. The tire height is an inch better than a 205/70,
the handle is good and they are very quite.
An added plus is they are not expensive.
{Around $75 ea.]

Typo error.
The tire Is Michilin "Rain Force-MX4."

There was an "X" Michilin we used to be able to get that was Euro sized also, but they are no longer available. This is a good replacement if you are looking for original sizing. Also available in the orig 185, but I went with the 195 for the extra height.
