The 190 SL is a great car though it could use another 50HP. I interested in looking into using the 2.3 16V or 2.5 16V in my 190 SL. Has anyone had any experience with engine swaps in the 190 SL? Any comments on would would be a good MB engine to use.

I've already done about all I can do with the stock engine short of using a 220 block. I've bored it to 1948cc, Weber 40DCOEs, port & polished manifolds, electronic ignition ....

Robby, When you calculate the cost of such a conversion and the loss of value your 190 SL would suffer as a result of such a modification, I wouldn't be suprised if it approached the cost of a good 280 SL. I'm far from a 190 SL expert, but weren't different axle ratios available for this model? Although I suspect this car is pretty low geared already, a "mountain"-type ratio may give you better acceleration at the expense of some engine durability and fuel economy.

Hi Robby,

I've heard of a number of conversions to these cars including a 289 V8. That car was recently for sale for less than $10k. I don't know what they did to the brakes, however. I certainly would make sure those were up to snuff first. I am investigating a disk conversion using 220 fintail parts.

btw: I would be very interested to hear what all you have already done to your car, especially with the suspension.

Eric

I'm taking your advice and leaving the 190 SL stock and I'm buying a 190E 16V.
