Engines 116.984/116.985 ??

In my manual on page 05-215 "Checking and adjusting of camshaft timing" it shows engines 116.984/116.985 with cam codes 58/59. I cannot determine what car those engines were in-does anyone know? I have checked everywhere including Startek Info engine identification and it shows no entry for those engines. They are Hydraulic cams so it must be a later engine.
Thanks

Tony H:

116.98x = 3.5L iron block

If in fact 58/59 cams are hydraulic (my tables group them with 42/43), my rather uneducated guess would be late 1970s
non-US W116 and R107 applications with a sales designation of 350SE/SL.

I have a NOS #58 cam I bought with some stuff and I wondered what it fit. Sounds like it is from a non US version since I can't think of any iron 3.5 with hydraulic valves.

Tony H:

What was the checking method you employed to determine that a code 58 is hydraulic?

Hi Frank,
On 05-215 it lists the cam as for hydraulic use only.

Tony H:

Fascinating, Captain; I have page 05-215 (an MB generic manual designation) from three different manuals, and none mention whether a given code# is hydraulic or solid.

There are notations next to each cam set that have a legend at the bottom of the page regarding the use of the cam. I will try to somehow post the page-I think the PDF will be to big. Maybe I can print it and scan it at a lower resolution.

Frank,
Here is the page from my manual. This is from the CD manual I bought from the Classic Center.
I have seen this table in several other manuals and as you mentioned this is the only one that has this information.

So back to my original question-is this cam a paperweight?

Tony H,

If memory serves me, your last choice of cams (for your project) was 56/57. The 58/59 cams are 5-6 degrees shorter @2mm lift, both have 104 deg. lobe centers, and the 58/59s are 4 degrees earlier with "stock" timing.

What is known about lift? You may have covered that in postings in your project thread. The cams for 117 engines had more lift than those for 116s.
However, since you have the cam in hand, you could check it also for lift.
