1971 280SE how to access fuel gauge

Good Afternoon
I have a 1971 280SE that has been in the barn for 13 years. I changed all the fluids and got it running, but the gas gauge does not work. I am guessing the old gas sitting there for all the years has corroded on the slides. Can someone tell me how to remove the fuel gauge? Do I have to drop the whole tank to access the fuel gauge?
Thanks
Pam

The fuel sender in my 73 280 SEL is accessible through the floor of the trunk. I also had a non-op fuel gauge that turned out to be a wire broken off the connector at the sender.

they can be repaired, not easily , hopeful its just gunked up , clean the fine wires very carefully they are very thin.

You may need a new gasket for the unit if you remove. I think I made one for mine out of gasket material

That part is normally called a fuel sending unit. It is very delicate so if time allows, you should search the forum as others have goofed it up.

If you want to see what they look like in advance, I even saw that someone has a youtube video on it (i searched for mercedes fuel sending unit). It was for an SD, so the location is different than on your car, but the part is similar.
