Is there a known problem(or fix) for the dual
points on the 1972 4.5 V8? My dad has replaced the points and/or coil a couple of times, and I wonder if he's fixing the 'symptoms.' Is there an Electronic Ignition available in the aftermarket?

Hi Randall,
That should be a single-point car. Are we talking ignition or fuel injection points? It has both. Is the car still using the original Transistor box or has it been switched to standard point-type ignition? Most of the cars get switched to regular points when the Transistor boxes go bad. The problem is that the ignition condensor on those models was never meant to handle the voltage from a conventional system. Its only function in the original system was for radio noise suppression. If the system is original, cut the short wire to the condensor
inside the distributor...it was part of an old MB service bulletin to prevent burning the points. The bulletin gives a part # for a cable to the points that has no condensor at all.
Contact me privately about alternative ignition solutions. I rebuild Bosch ignition distributors for a living.
Regards,
Randy D.

I beleive my dad got the engine for the '72 4.5 out of a parts car, which may or may not have been a '72. This might be why it's dual points ignition vs single.

I need the full email address to talk with Randy D (WDurrance?), privately.

The only V-8 Mercedes that used a dual-point was a 6.3/600. But I have seen a few cars with modified Mallory distributors on them...anything is possible. You need to get the numbers off the side of the distributor housing. Then, and only then....maybe, I can figure out what you've got.

Randy D.
