engine id tag
i purchased a 1975 240d and ordered parts (ie fuel filt, oil filt, air filt) and
none of them are correct. i cleaned off engine id tag and am trying to decode number. it reads Teil-Nr 6160102600 80, the 80 is stamped out and above it 88 is stamped into the tag. is this a newer engine? what does the 80 crossed out with 88 stamped into tag mean? i could not find any good sites on the internet to decode number. |

Teil-nr is German for 'part number'. Really 'Part-no'.

You are looking for a 14 digit number that will be stamped into the block just above the tag you have photographed.
The number should start out with 616.916. |

The 616010260088 is a part number (part is only or also supplied as reconditioned part, engine OM616.916), the 638666 is a unit number. |

Congrats on having a rebuilt engine. Note that the serial number is on that tag (638666), the area on the block where it is usually found will probably be ground flat.

About twenty-five years or so ago I was purchasing some parts from Park Place Mercedes in Dallas when a customer arrived and asked for his engine. It was one of these rebuilt units.
I asked if Mercedes rebuilt all engines and was told that they did once but it was no longer the case, and that when they announced they were going to stop rebuilding these engines Park Place ordered a number of them for their inventory. This is actually a rather rare find as the cost for a DB rebuilt engine was significantly higher than one would expect from a repair shop, but according to Park Place the quality was significantly higher as well. |

On the '82 240D I acquired a few years back, I was pleasantly surprised to find a "Tauschaggregat" tag on the front of the engine. Probably one reason why it seems much smoother and quieter at speed than my previous pair of 240Ds.
Of course, the solid body on this car also helps, as my first two were 'Swiss-cheese' cars. Happy Motoring, Mark

You probably ordered parts for a w123 model your car I assume is a w115 model.....post a photo of the engine and we can provide the part number for the filters you need. Also remember the air filter is not replaceable it is reusable, it is called an oil bath filter....you simply clean it with gas, fill oil in the filter housing to the proper level and its done.....your oil filter is the same way, it is a two piece one is meant to be replaced and the other rinsed and reused....fuel filters, you will either have a cartridge style secondary or a spin on plus a small clear primary filter....

awesome!! thanks for pics. i did not have a air filter installed upon purchase, but that looks like the ticket. my fuel filter was a spin on not the cartridge style for whatever reason. i tried to load pic of my engine but file size was too large and would not go through. very helpful!
