w108 odometer repair
I took the speedometer out of my w108 to repair a non working odometer. Of course when I bench tested it everything worked fine. Put it back, worked for 25 miles, now it's dead again. I think that possibly the problem is the metal gear that is on the odometer digits' shaft is spinning in the shaft. I don't see any other places where it could loose movement, as all the gears are fine.
Anybody has had this, and what is the solution? I was thinking of putting a dab of JB Weld on that gear, so it bonds with the shaft in the middle and the gear as well. Opinions? Thanks,

Locktite
When I repaired the odometer gn my W109 i used a little green locktite between the pot metel gear and the shaft. I did this over a year ago and it has worked great.

How did you get the loctite in there? Did you take it apart, or is it possible to loctite it as assembled? Thanks.

You must take it apart but this is not hard. It was built to be re-built and all one must do after removing the speedo from the cluster is to unscrew the back and remove the cover.
Careful now.... There is a magnet in there that must spin free and when you are taking the unit apart this magnet can attach itself to another part of the unit. Nothing will be damaged by this but the first feeling you have when this takes place is that you have ruined something forever. All in all this is a simple repair, but the complex nature of a speedometer can be a bit overwhelming until you have actually repaired one. |
