Rear axle swap for W111? Disk brakes?
Hi -
I just acquired a 1963 220 Sb, which is going to be our new project. One question I have is whether or not a disk-brake axle from another car is a drop-in replacement (such as from a 1967 W108). If people have suggestions for this I would appreciate it. thanks Scott |

On coupes the later cars came with discs at the rear and you can switch them out, not sure if these fit the sedan but most mechanical parts translate. The W108 is like the later coupes with discs brakes in that they switch up a size to 14" wheels to accommodate the larger brakes so you will have to source those, and will use a different wheel cover too, the one piece instead of two (hub and ring).

I have been told that the 108 or 109 brake system is a direct drop in for this car. Note that I have been told this; I have never done it myself.
You would have to go to 14 inch wheels, but that's not hard and there are a lot of old alloys out there that go cheap. |

Some quick snooping around shows that the only way to get discs in the back is to swap to a 108 or 109 rear axle assembly. If you choose to go this way then you might as well shoot for a 6.3 assembly if you can find one since they were normally limited slip.
But they also all came with air-bags, so this might present a new set of problems. A 108 diff assembly would fit, but make sure you keep the same gear ratios or the car may not drive the way you would like for it to at highway speeds. |

Thanks for the inputs. Short-term I'm putting a set of Bundts with good tires on the car because I have them and the existing tires (13") are shot. Longer term I'll either get the 13 tires or I'll get 14" steel wheels that take a dog dish and trim ring. Not exactly as nice as the trim ring on the 13" wheels, but still nice. If I were going with the later full wheel covers then I would use the Aluminum-that-look-like-steel wheels but weigh 11 pounds. But those don't play nice with dog dish hubcaps or beauty rings...
I don't really know what I'll find when I look at the brakes except I am fairly confident that when I add brake fluid to the reservoir that it basically all leaks out and the right rear wheel over a period of a couple of days. |

I put one in from a 108 4.5. The 109 would be lots more work if even possible?

I have no desire to deal with anything from a 109 suspension. If I swap I'll use whatever 108 has the same gear ratio as this 111... thanks
