With any reboxer, there is a chance you could get a quality OEM part. The chances are better if the item is old stock. But there's an equal chance you could get junk, like the Beck-Arnley reboxed Uro fan clutch.

It depends if the price is low enough to make it worth the gamble, and if you are willing to deal with the hassle of returning the junk which may arrive, and if you have time to deal with the return. If your car is down and you need the right part NOW, buying a reboxer brand could end up costing more in the long run.

It's whyI prefer going to the store vs mail-order or online.

A friend orders BMW hoses from worldpac half are OEM half are URO. He just orders 10 at a time keeps the OEM in stock and returns the URO. Worldpac is local to us so its easy to do.

Reminds me of a few years ago when when I needed a fuel filter for my 240D one night. At two local parts-stores, I found two identical Purolator boxes. One had a German MANN filter. The other had a plain white filter with only a number and 'Made in China' on it. The Chinese one was $3 cheaper. Though it might have been perfectly OK, I didn't try to save the $3.

do "reboxers" usually leave the original labels on or is it obvious what brand items they are? the B&A fuel pump on rock auto is only like $38, seeing as auto zone charges more for a airtek this is a risk i may be willing to take

I just don't think that the time/cost of playing Reboxer Roulette is worth it.... just to save a few bucks. Especially when supercheap sources for factory parts are well known out there.

Sometimes yes, sometimes now. You won't know until the box arrives. The original label is usually gone, but sometimes the part is marked with the OEM name.

I agree with Gerry, most of the time it is just not worth it... find the best deal you can on the name-brand / OEM item.

In the past when you bought a part there was a fairly good chance that it would work as intended. Unfortunately over the past twenty years, and with increasing frequency, replacement parts are defective directly out of the box. This trend is particularly noticable with electrical items and makes one doubt one's diagnostic skills when one or more replacement items fail to cure the problem. Time is money and OEM is so unreasonably expensive that striking the proper balance is more and more difficult.

Yes, and no. Its always worth a call to the dealer to find out how much genuine is, some of the Mercedes stuff is surprisingly cheap. A genuine mercedes oil pan gasket for a 722 costs the same as its URO counterpart. It was like $4.90 for my '92 300D.

Not true of everything, but its worth a call to find out.

Also if you are going to buy a lot of parts, the dealer is... a dealer, they can negotiate with you. I have developed a great relationship with my parts manager, and I have an account with a substantial discount. Save for the occasional incredibly priced OEM part, I am even buying oil, air filters, oil filters, and wipers at the dealer because the prices are low enough. You don't pay shipping at the dealer, and in a pinch they can overnight you parts for free. They overnighted me parts for the 190SL to get ready to concours this past summer, it was a huge help and the parts were only like $10 more than other vintage SL suppliers who are out of town and needed 3-7 days to ship.

I still do shop around, there are some parts that Mercedes simply wants too much for, but I am continually surprised at how reasonable the dealer is.

i assume it's pretty obvious from this thread that i do not know many aftermarket brands for these old mercedes parts.

can anyone recommend a good after market brand? or am i just beating a dead horse, and should bite the bullet and get an oem one?

I think the pump for your 72 is around $1,000 if its the same as my 72 350SL 4.5. Some people have used the air tex with success. D jet is fairly particular about fuel volume as well as pressure. Many pumps can supply the pressure but few sulu the volume d jet needs.

Where is it leaking? The inlet or the electrical connector? You can take the front cover off and clean the rollers and come up with o rings at Fastenal. If you take it apart note the orientation of the spacer disc and the inlet cover. The hole in the spacer is offset so if you install it wrong the pump won't mine fuel anymore. The outlet check valve is also worth removing and making sure it is working. However if your electrical connector is leaking I couldn't find a way to fix that. In my case I went though two $50 used pumps before I got a good one.

You may be better served by starting a separate thread.

Last I checked, the Bosch D-Jet pumps used on other vehicles with D-Jet (Nissan Zs, Volvos, Porsches to name a few) are pretty much all interchangeable aside from some mounting differences. When you say the pump whines - have you actually replaced the fuel filter and cleaned or replaced the tank screen? These are absolutely the first thing I would do if your pump seems to be making noise.
