Regardless of whether some think they're ugly, personally I find the Bundts overly 'fussy' styled and hard to clean. Ironically, I have an extra set of Bundts with good tires I may install on my W114 250C if I ever get it back on the road. Otherwise, both the W123s I've wound up with have them, and for now I don't dislike them enough to change them out. But I do have a set of aluminum hubcap rims with matching hubcaps for my 240D to consider the next time I need to replace tires. I also have a set of "14 'smooth-face' alloys I found on a W123 300CD in the Pick-N-pull. Those look like the style used on the early W201 190E.
I still have a set of the early steel W108 "14 'small-hubcap' rims, if I should someday acquire another Fintail. Happy Motoring, Mark

Another plug for the Maxxis MA-1's.
At $100/ea and Free Shipping, they're going to be the best and most cost effective solution out there aside from switching to a 14" steel wheel. Decent tires, very happy overall. Good luck and keep us posted. |

Hmmmm. Might go that route. The data says "raised white letter" but the picture shows a whitewall with raised black letters... which is it?

Never heard of Maxis tires. Where are they made? Are they really worth $125 per tire?
When I acquired my '60 Fintail in 2001, It had a set of 185/80R13 Pirelli P300s. They were a great tire for that car. But they were already 11 years old. Three years later, I was really getting nervous about the safety of that aged rubber. So I found a closeout set of four 185/80R13 B F Goodriches at Sam's Club for $140. While there was no longer any worry about dry-rotted tires, they were no match for the handling quality of the Pirellis! If I swapped to my "14 rims, for $400 I can get four 185/70R14 Michelins at Sam's club or Costco. Happy Motoring, Mark

They are $100 per tire, shipped. I ordered them today. The limited reviews that I found were decent (one person complained that the whitewall separated or something, the other reviews were good). I don't know where they are made.
Basically it comes down to aesthetics. In order to have a wheel treatment that is more period correct than a full wheel cover, I would have to paint and possibly add studs for hubcaps to wheels, which is a bunch of work. FWIW the two newer of the old tires are Perelli P300s, the other two are much worse and mixed brands... So for now my quest is over... but if I go down one of the more adventurous 14" paths I will pick up with this thread... |

Aesthetics aside, until the tires are installed, one never really knows how well they will perform. As my Fintail wasn't a show-car, driving-feel and handling were more important to me, so I refused to go with one of the very few no-name "13 tires availible then, but wound up dissappointed by the B F Goodriches. The early "14 W108 rims would've allowed me to fit a much better tire while still accomodating the small Fintail hubcaps, though not the trim-rins. At least I got to enjoy the old "13 Pirellis for a few years until age and rust finally retired the car.
Happy Motoring, Mark

Maxxis tires are actually pretty common. Between me and three friends we have the 13" Maxis tires on six cars. Everyone seems happy with them, particularly because they are correct for the car and fill the wheel wells like the original bias ply tires. The only issue I've had, as I posted before, is that it takes a minute or so of driving to smooth out after the car has sat for a few weeks. I think that's normal with any tire. Anyway, enjoy you 111. Maxxis International, the US operation of Maxxis Tires, is headquartered in Suwanee, Georgia. As with most tires they are manufactured in many countries. The only way to be sure of the manufacturing location is to look at the code on the tire.

OFFSET does change throughout the body styles.....The 123 does have the same offset as the 126 series, right until the last model....I believe these all will fit a fintail, with correct offset....The 190 series and the midsize 300E series, have a DIFFERENT offset that will not work.
I think that IF the fintail wheel studs were removed, that the BUNDT BOLTS will fit. Good luck and have fun. |

On a happy note, I took my car for it's first real drive. About up to 80 mph. It shifted well, brakes were good, steering was good. Very nice. Attached is a photo of my make-shift temporary gas tank... |

Go to Maxxis website. Some of our ponton guys have found 13" tires from them and have given them a good report. Not expensive either.

I did. I bought the Maxxis tires and had them mounted 2 weeks ago. But yesterday was the first time that the car was in condition to be driven. Fun fun fun!
