Wanted: S. California mobile mechanic to install CV boot W111

For reasons unclear to me I don't feel comfortable installing a replacement CV boot on the swing axle of my 1963 220S. I have the part (new split boot) but no clamps or staples. Is there someone in the Los Angeles area who would like to be paid to come over and do it or help me do it? Hog Ring Pliers are said to be required for this task, which I do not have... The car is not currently in driving condition.

Scott

As an aside, my mechanic replaced mine with a split boot, then two years later once it started leaking they told me it should be replaced with a single-piece unit that is available. I don't know why they didn't use this in the first place but maybe something you want to consider.

Swing Axle rubber boot replacement

Replacing the swing axle rubber boot with a solid boot requires the removal of the right axle and axle housing. That requires the removal of the large hinge pin and to do that properly the entire axle assembly has to be removed from the car.

Since that requires a lot of work, most people install the split rubber axle boot. Here is a link from the Pagoda W113 website with some good instructions and pictures on installing the split rubber boot.

I've read somewhere that the split boot is readily available, but the clamp that you need to join the seam together has been no longer available for years.

Clips

The MB part number for the clips is 0029881078 and it will require 9 clips. Check with any local MB dealer or the MB classic center. From a quick search on the web for that part number the clips do seem to be available.

There are 9 staples, which have been replaced by hog ring staples and hog ring plyers, and two giant hose clamps. I haven't found those available. Just now I was able to salvage one off of 1 1966 220. I couldn't get the outer one off. Oddly enough the car had either a replaced single piece boot or an unlikely original one.

The reason I'm not doing the single piece boot is as stated above - lots of labor.

MB used to have a kit consisting of two clamps and 9 staples. That repair kit is NLA.

E-mail Tom Hanson at the Mercedes Benz Classic Center thomas.hanson@mbusa.com

He can tell you right away if the clips are available separately or not.

I sent him email. But it is my understanding that the clips are now hog ring staples and the hose clamp things don't exist anymore... I'll update this when I find a better answer. I still want someone to do the job for me...

If they're available, Tom Hanson will get his hands on them.

Tom says that the clamps and the staples are in stock, although the tool for installing the staples is NLA.

Well that might be a problem. How can you install the staples without the tool.

Maybe you can tow your car to a shop that specializes in the older models.

I know that Marx Mercedes in Costa Mesa is very likely to have one. He specializes in the older cars. I had an issue with my 280SE 4.5, and I was referred to his shop by the Mercedes Classic Center.

From what I have heard, the staples are similar to hog ring staples, and those can be used. I'll consider checking a local shop that installs split CV boots on "normal" cars and see if they say "no problem" or "go away"...

Hog ring pliers

Hog ring pliers can easily be found on the internet for $15-20

I was having the diff resealed and some other work done so this was the process my shop used, which is exactly why I was confounded when they told me they used the split boot. You're right that it's easier to install, but I wanted to make the info known in case there was more work being done on the car.

FWIW, mine has the flat type staples, most old Benz shops will still have the tool, or just switch to the newer style as it should work just as well on a split boot.
