Insurance for 1979 240D - no anti-lock brakes?
First, sorry if this is in the wrong forum - if mods want to move this to another area, please do so.
I asked my insurance company (Liberty Mutual) why the premium on the 1979 240D was $570/year as a pleasure car vs the $436/year for the 1991 300E as the daily driver. Their reason was: The 240D did not have anti-lock brakes or airbags. Is this true? I'm wondering if I could try insuring it as a "classic/antique" car as it is a 3rd car, driven rarely, now that I have the 300E for work and the truck as a second car. The truck, btw, is $400/year as a pleasure car.

You surely could insure at as a classic. I've been very happy with Haggerty for several years now.
If you're interested in towing coverage - look at their packages. Much cheaper than AAA, they'll tow anything you're driving (yours or not), and every time I've used it the service has been fantastic. Data point - I pay ~ $200 per year, with 150 mile free towing, for my 78 300SD.

Make sure you check the classic policy well. Many of them stipulate that you can't drive the vehicle to work (even if it is not your primary vehicle), must be garaged overnight, etc.
Data point - I pay $125/year for my 1970 MGB on a Haggerty policy. |

This is perfect, just what I was looking for!
My soft quote just came back as $212 per year - much more reasonable. Of course, the car will sit most of the time with a maximum guess of 360 or 500 miles max per year. Did anyone ask for the financing option for restoration funds? I wonder what that is all about....

If classic insurance restrictions don't work for you (ie. you can't drive the car to work, always has to be garaged, etc), then you may get a regular policy, but ask for a 'low miles driven' (not sure what it is actually called) discount. On both my previous 98 Volvo, and now the Benz, I drive less than 5000 miles a year and regular full coverage insurance is about $400/year. My insurance company is AAA.

If Hagerty won't cover the car (no reason not to, but you never know) - that was going to be my next plan.
If I'm going to have to change to AAA or State Farm or other insurance company that offers a low mileage plan, Liberty Mutual will lose premiums on a total of 3 cars.

Hagerty requires that the car be in a garage (lockable) and not a daily driver. Does not mean you can not occasionaly drive it to work. No milage or time of day restriction. At least last time I checked my policy on another car.

How do they know if you drive the car to work or how much you actually drive it? I know they could ask for the mileage for tracking but what is the odometer is broken?

Quote:
AAA rates were way high, same as Liberty Mutual. State Farm was willing to offer $202/year, same as Hagerty. Substantially less on the other cars, too. Will have to study the details before I switch over.

This is true , a 240D has neither. It's time to shop for another policy.
