Blaupunkt, I thought theses cars had beckers? 1969 w108 280s

I just pulled the original radio out of my 280s.

It seems to be a blaupunkt FTZ-nr. U 108.....7 632 629 200.

Can anyone shed some light on this for me? I thought theses cars had beckers for the most part.
Works great but I need to modernize abit

Thanks

Radios from the factory were Becker. Dealer installed were Blaupunkt. Probably a Blaupunkt Frankfurt. Why do you need to modernize?

Well there are certainly options that preserve a stock look. I wouldn't keep the blaupunkt given that nice Beckers are available for not all that much money, and most beckers are setup for an aux-in cable in the back such that you can play MP3s. A W108 will take any big-face Becker pinstripe radio and looks stock, so putting in a Europa Stereo or a Europa II stereo and adding MP3 is a relatively easy task.

Just about every MB that I saw in the UK had a Blaupunkt. Up until the 90's, radios were a factory option. Actually for just about every model, the only standard features were power steering and central locking.

Oh ok I got it.

I'm pretty particular when it comes to audio and I don't mind not having the stock look. I enjoy a good mix of vintage and "to date" looks in older cars. This will be the only deviation from stock in my car.
It's kind of hard finding a head unit that doesn't look like a stupid spaceship though.

If anyone is interested in buying this, if it's worth it to you, shoot me a PM.
The centers of the knobs are cracked and will need replacing but the unit itself works just fine.

google retro sound usa

I dislike them but if the choice is retro sound or a spaceship then I guess it's the lesser of two evils...

Blue Spot radios were the choice of VW so there were a lot of them laying around. It could be that the original Becker died and someone had a Blaupunkt handy.

Becker had a retro themed Mexico II head unit, don't think it ever was launched in the US but it does look perfect. You could also tuck the new radio in the glove box or under passengers seat...

I wouldn't say it looks perfect, but it is nice. The problem is the retro becker radios with navigation, etc don't have maps available for the United States.

I think it will look great in your trunk or glove compartment! :-) Whatever works for you. You won't get points for period correctness but clearly you want nice audio more.

My only hesitation (given your priorities) is that you have selected a headunit that appears to not support Bluetooth either for A2DP streaming audio or phone conversations... If you are going to change the look of the dash, why omit bluetooth?

Haha! Now thats funny!

I'm abit old school when it comes to bluetooth. I actually never use it. Id rather plug an earbud in my ear to talk and drive. As for streaming music, I just use my trusty MP3 player plugged in directly
I was considering HD radio but all the headunits I found with that are not my style.

The no-cord option for the MP3 player is nice (assuming you are using a smartphone for your mp3 player). I don't like bluetooth earbuds or regular earbuds. I much prefer the sound to be coming through the front left speaker and the microphone to be mounted in the mirror area out of sight. I guess this speaks to my dislike of random wires around me and in the car...

95% of what I listen to in my car is internet radio, typically from Germany. I have an unlimited data plan so it doesn't matter how much I stream, and it still ends up being just over 2 GB per month. My (modern) car has HD radio and all the gadgets and the HD radio is OK but I actually just don't listen to commercial radio from the US. Only as a last resort... I tried Sirius and dislike it.

I have a dedicated MP3 for my car (Zune) so it just lives there. My smartphone battery sucks as is.

I'm not a fan of Sirius or any of those. I tend to make playlists depending on whatever.
Unless I Dynamt or fatMat the hell out of my car I think the bluetooth option could be annoying due to road noise for the otherside of the call.

US radio is only good for morning BS radio shows here in Seattle.
