Did all 240Ds come with A/C?
Just asking as a new owner of a 74 240D I'm still learning about this fantastic car. I thought I didn't but while trying to fix my cigar lighter I noticed the A/C blower tucked back the the center console. I don't have any lines or compressor but I do have the motor. Now could that just be for pulling cold air while the heater motor only works for pulling in hot air? Neither work by the way so I'm working on figuring that out.
As that has been stated... How is the panel under the windshield removed? I have popped out the clips and removed the wipers and bolts under said wipers but can't seem to get it to budge. Couldn't find anything in the FSM I downloaded. Lost of AC nonsense but zilch about the heater. May be missing that section. Another question in regards to the blower. I noticed in pics the fan looks something like a radiator fan. Has anyone replaced the blower with a small radiator fan? Not sure how much the heat in that small area would be a factor but radiator fans need to be rather heat resistant. Thanks, Anthony |

Post a picture of your center console.
In a 114/115 the heater blower and A/C blower are separate blowers, which one comes on is controlled by a temp (cold) knob in the center console in the row above the ash tray. My understanding is the heater blower is a total PITA to replace. Chances are that you don't have AC. Do you have a temp knob on the dash with a blue increasing coldness scale? |

This is what the heating-coil unit looks like on the 114/115 vehicles

So yes, if your car has a knob that says "colder" on it your car had AC at one point. The colder knob is complicated - it includes a vacuum switch that causes flaps to move and causes the fan switch higher up between the vents to switch from the AC fan to the Heater fan. Colder knob 100% off = heater fan functions. Colder knob elsewhere = AC fan functions.
I can't remember whether or not the vacuum component controls the just the flap movement or the flap movement AND the electrical changeover to make the fan switch control the proper fan. Probaby to test this your car will need functioning vacuum to the switch. Does it have that? If the vacuum reservoir is nice and vacuumed, you can move the switch and hear the flap move with the engine off. It should flap two or three times at least before the vacuum is depleted. If you have vacuum and turn the key to ON you should be able to hear the changeover between the two fans. |

I have not heard anything. But wasn't really listening for it either. Neither fans are currently working. What's the plug to check with a voltmeter to check if it's getting power?
