That's the same chart that I have in my factory service manual. It's so vague. Thanks, though!

Naaa, it only looks vague....

800 RPM 3 to 13 degrees, with vacuum control attached
800 RPM 3 to 13 degrees, without vacuum control attached
1500 RPM 18 to 25 degrees, without vacuum control attached
3000 RPM 23 to 29 degrees, without vacuum control attached
4500 RPM 35 degrees, without vacuum control attached

I went through this on my W108 280S and it was somewhat of a pain in the ass. I think we ended up using a little bit of white-out on the crank shaft pulley so that I could see the marks with the strobe light...

re: $350 to work on roommates car. I will gladly pay you more than that to come work on my car!

Engine compartment looks BEAUTIFUL on that car. Question: The rubber boot between the air filter housing and the air filter thing on top of the carbs -- I just bought that rubber boot for my car, but I couldn't find any part numbers for clamps that hold it in place. Is it friction fit, or should there be clamps, or did you add zip ties....?

thanks
Scott

3-13 degrees at 800 RPM seems vague to me. So do I set it at 3 degrees? 4 degrees? 5 degrees? 6 degrees? 7 degrees? 8 degrees? 9 degrees? 10 degrees? 11 degrees? 12 degrees? 13 degrees? And is it before or after top dead center? I am assuming before top dead center. I'm used to a book saying "set timing at X BTDC at X RPM with vacuum line plugged".

Also, my tachometer doesn't go above 2000 RPM.

I think there are supposed to be clamps on the rubber boot on the air cleaner, though it seems to usually fit okay without them. My roommate added large black plastic zip ties, which have been holding well.

At least on my 280S, it was unambiguous regarding BTDC / ATDC. I tried to get it in the middle of the range for as many of the different RPMs as possible. I think you might benefit from a tach that goes over 2000 RPM...

It seems like it should have clamps but I can't find anything in EPC. When I found the part in EPC it came up with a "clamp" to go with it, but when that arrived it was like a 1" hose clamp... useless for this application.
