If the system shows no signs of conversion, tossing a can of R134a into an R12 system will destroy the entire system. Either take it to a shop to diagnose the R12, read up on the forums on diagnosing it, or do a full R134a conversion properly before throwing that can in. Otherwise, you will need to tear the dash apart to replace the evaporator in addition to the other work needed to convert.

Thanks, I have no plans of contaminating the r12 if that is what currently in the system. When I try to use the AC it appears all is well but the the compressor doesn't engage, that led to the assumption that the system likely had leaks. Finding that not to be the case was a surprise.

When I rehab the AC I will be sticking with R12.

Just so no one thinks these additional photos are entirely self serving, user Hugin is going to be repainting his car and requested some more pictures.

Bill, thanks a lot for your effort, I am more certain then ever about a repaint. Just have to find the right person for the job, it will be a complete repaint with focus on quality. I expect to pay in the order of 7000 USD for the job here in Norway

I know it's a 6.3 but you are a braver man than I the task of a good respray seems so large in my eyes. My W115 was repainted properly in 1996 by the then 2nd owner, the receipt reads $7319.24 USD. The car was hit in the rear, a 240D being hit from behind sounds stereotypical, so there were body panels replaced as well upping the cost considerably.

Anyway good luck, i would love to see the finished product!
