1963 220S Fintail Carb and Engine tuning...
Background: 1963 220S parked for 7 to 10 years, trailered from Texas to Los Angeles and in my driveway for the last two months.
Work done:
Prior to doing any of this stuff, the car would sort of start if choke pulled all the way out (2 clicks) and idle fast. Push choke in = engine dies. Now car can be driven (about 15 miles on the 1 gallon of gas). It runs pretty well and certain things that I was not able to clean in the carbs have slowly come back to life. For example, the accelerator pumps now work and didn't before. Problems: Car dies immediately if I push the choke all the way in. If I let it warm a bit and push it half way in (middle click) it runs fine. There is no smoke when idling or under acceleration or under deceleration. Throttle linkage seems sticky. I assume I need to clean and lube everything that moves with the gas pedal. I'm not clear on what to do next in order to get it to drive properly. With the choke out as required to keep it running the idle is way too high. I don't know Solex carbs at all, I assume there must be clogged idle jets, but not sure about that. I'm very open to suggestions for easy and efficient ways to proceed. Other items: Distributor cap looks new, wires seem good. Battery is strong. I have not adjusted the valves or timing as it seems premature given that I still have carb issues. I would appreciate suggestions and instructions on what to do about the car wanting to have the choke out. I suspect there is something that is gummed up that when cleaned will cause the car to idle without the choke and at that point I can concern myself with timing and valves. I also assume that lubricating the throttle linkage will make things a bit better. On a separate note, the driver's door tends to not close well. When driving on the freeway to the glass shop to have new windshield installed I made the mistake of having the interior windows rolled up. The giant hole in the front windshield increased the air pressure such that the driver's door blew open on the freeway, causing a very unexpected lurch to the right. I was quite startled. So I need to do something about the poor-working drivers door latch. thanks!!! Scott |

Sounds like a clogged orifice or a vacuum leak. My Solexes were wonky until I took them completely apart, cleaned everything, and installed a rebuild kit:
Solex 36 PDSI Carburetor Kit The FSM has a set-up procedure that is step-by-step and very detailed. Get the engine running as best you can, set the timing, then do the final carb adjustments again (idle rpm, mixture, and balance).

You can't adjust the carbs until the valves and timing are right. Do that first and do a compression check before you put the plugs back in after adjusting the valves.

Identify my carbs?
I would like to order rebuild kits for the carbs but I'm not exactly sure what I have. I'm particularly confused because on the inside of the barrel both carbs say SOLEX 32-23 as shown in the picture... 1963 220S Fintail...

Those Solex carbs are pretty much the same as the earlier 220S ponton cars. Check out this article from the MBZ Ponton site on reconditioning the Solex carbs.
