Suggestions for un-sticking early style fuel sender?

My 63 Fintail has the early style fuel sender - the kind with a float on a rod, etc. I have it so that it moves and is pretty clean, but it moves stiffly such that it isn't going to raise and lower with fuel level. I'm thinking of soaking it upside-down such the pivot point is submerged in lacquer thinner. Thoughts?

thanks
Scott

Scott - I cannot think of any harm to the sender to soak it in lacquer thinner. I am also thinking WD40 or even penetrating oil?

Your problems with this are many, and all on a small scale, so each must be attacked in turn.

To clean the assembly you could soak it in TechronŽ, which is a Chevron product you can pick up at most auto supply places. This will clean everything and yet not harm your assembly.

Now you will have a clean assembly that will not move easily due to a lack of lube. So a bit of 3 in 1 oil, or Marvel Mystery oil, here and there applied with a toothpick will ease things up.

You might try oiling it now. When in the gas tank the gas acts to lube it.

I did this with an old 911 gas tank sending unit assembly. It worked like new when I was finished.

Hmm

You might also try soaking it in PB Blaster.

Thanks for the suggestions people. I've soaked in in various iterations of lacquer thinner, alcohol, 3-in-1 oil, WD40. The movement is pretty good now. Sometimes the float will fall on its own. I don't think it will have any problem going in the up direction. I'm going to cross my fingers and hope that the vibration of the car will help the float to go down when the car is running...

And oddly enough it seems to work.
Should there be a low-fuel light indicator with this float and a 1963 220S W111? I think so. I haven't tested to see if that works...
