I blame it on the Valet.
Back story:
Replaced the battery in my W108 4.5 two months ago. Got an air ride system on my car. Draws a small current continuously b/c it puts out a wifi signal that allows remote control. Usually I pull the neg lead off when I'm not using the car, because I drive it only once every two/three weeks. Saturday, I had to jump the car because I forgot to take the lead off. Fired right up after letting it charge for a few seconds. Take off on a fun run. Valet the car, go in for lunch. Come back to pick it up, notice the car in the corner, valet appears to be having trouble. I walk over to discover that he's trying to shove the wrong key in the hole (he was trying to shove a bright green Kawasaki key in there. Does that look 45 years old?!?!). Showed him the right key, and he tries to crank it while pushing the accelerator into the ground but it won't start right (as expected, it's not carbed!). I tell him to get the hell away from my car. I get in, try to start it, and it feels like it's running on 3 cylinders. Starts, but barely idles. Wait a few minutes, rev it some, get it moving, and after about 1/2 mile it's running just as strong as ever. I assume he just flooded it...but then a few hours I got back in the car to move it back into the garage and the same thing. But again, as soon as I get moving a bit, it seems to run just fine. Any ideas? |

Strange. These cars typically suffer from under delivery of fuel.

I guess it could be a weak fuel pump, and it needs a few moments to build up fuel pressure...I'll try checking the voltage at the pump leads.

Happened on my 4.5 when the EFI trigger points got fouled from oil. Especially when cold. It'll start and run on 4 cyls, but not well, and trying to move is laborious until 6, then all 8 cylinders come online. Search the forums, it's common on these, especially in the cold weather.

The "trigger points" are different from the ignition points under the distributor cap. They are located behind a curved panel on the side of the distributor on these models and serve to "trigger" the Bosch D jetronic electronic fuel injectors. Oil creeps up the distributor shaft over time and fouls these points. They can also get worn out/out of adjustment after many years. I believe new ones are once again available from the MB Classic Center, although expensive. Do a "trigger points" search on this forum for further information.
