Early 60's Pagoda ignition switch dilema
Hey a friend got a early pagoda --sl and it has a broken ignition switch, i looked at it and it appears to have some piece of metyal broke off in the slot half filling it,,,, does a benz of this yr have keys that looks like a regular 80's style key?
And what other benz's could the ignition be swapped from--looks like it is not locked into the column as its straight in the dash. |

I'm pretty sure that a 113 ignition switch is unique to that body. It will be a single side key that looks like

You might try taking your issue to sl113.org - the likelihood of a good answer is high there.

Get on SL113.org, you'll get some help.
The ignition is tied into the steering column, look under the dash and you should see it. I believe you have to cut the collar to drop the tumbler out, but hopefully I am wrong. This is 280SE, but you get the idea This is a 113 diagram If it is not tied in like that, it has an aftermarket ignition it, which I've seen on a lot of Pagodas. If the key is broken off in the lock you should take it to a lock smith and see if they can get it out. The Classic Center can cut you new keys from your chassis number. They can also rebuild your ignition tumbler for you. On my 190SL it was around $3,100, expensive but an option.

My ignition tumbler on my 1965 230sl was split in half and it made it impossible to turn the key. On this car, you need to remove all 3 instruments form the dash, unbolt the steering column from the floor, unbolt the coupling, undo the steering bracket, pull steering column and ignition lock out, unbolt ignition lock from steering columns, undo ignition plug form lock and you now have your part in hand. Remove screws from chrome bezel and you can now take out your tumbler...Yes, it's a real job! I discovered that it was impossible to find a replacement. Apparently, the tumbler for the 250 and 280 sl's is different than the one on the 230sl. From your picture, you have an early model of ignition lock. Te model for the 250Sl and 280Sl will not fit on a 230SL.
I found a fabulous solution on ebay. They remanufacture tumblers. Besides a new tumbler, you get 3 Neiman keys, a new chrome cover, two screws to replace the pins you had to drill out and an extra locking ring should you ever need to go inside. All this for 125$. Much cheaper than the alternative which was to replace the whole thing with the steering lock. You can find it here: http://stores.ebay.com/Gullwing-Automotive?_trksid=p2047675.l2563 I'm in no way affiliated to these guys. Just wanted to convey the info, should it be useful to anyone. Best of luck! JP |
