1963 220S Clutch Slave Cylinder / hose problem
So while replacing the subframe mounts on the 63 220S I decided to replace the clutch hose and bleed the clutch again. Unfortunately when I tried to do this, the new hose didn't fit correctly into the old slave cylinder fitting. As best as I can tell, the old hose and the new hose are the same thread but the old hose was screwed into a brass fitting that was screwed into the slave cylinder, and the threads between the old hose and the brass fitting are bad to say the least.
So my question is... Do I order a new slave cylinder and hope that the fitting has become obsolete? I can't find the fitting in EPC, nor can I find the hose, but I _did_ find the hose at one point because I ordered it from MB by part number (I think). The part number for the hose I have is A 002 428 46 35 The part number that EPC says I should have for the slave cylinder is A 000 295 08 07 But it is very odd that I can't find the hose. Perhaps if I found the hose in EPC I would also find the fitting. ... Oh wait, I found it in EPC by searching by the part number for the master cylinder. For whatever reason, the hose that EPC says I want is A 000 295 0035. If I google that it comes up on various parts sites as an alternate part number to the one I have... So anyway, does anyone know what is up with this fitting between the slave and the hose? thanks Scott |

That fitting shouldn't be there. I know that the early clutch masters have strange thread sizes. I went to have one made for my 110 and they had to reuse the fitting. So I'm not sure, looks like someone also had a similar problem and tried to use a generic metric adapter. You may have trouble finding the correct hose. Err.. never mind, looks like you may have to replace or re tap the slave if the threads are damaged.

Are rebuild kits available for clutch and brake master cylinders for these fintails? I have heard that they are not. New master is like $160 for the clutch and not sure how much for the brake...

Yeah you can buy the rubber for the slave. I would check eBay. I rebuilt mine and never had another problem with it.. But your issue is with the threads, not the slave itself correct? I would imagine if you buy a new slave the threads will also be coarse, looks like you may have a hose problem after all then.

The slave is old and the cost of a new one is something like $56, so rebuilding the slave isn't something I want to do. On the other hand, the master is also ancient and I suspect it of internal leaking AND I have a similar parts car. It might be worth it to rebuild the master brake and clutch on the parts car and put them into the driver car, and then rebuild the driver car masters and keep or sell them...

Sounds like at some time in the past someone adapted the wrong hose or cylinder. This isn't surprising, as those parts were all NLA for some time. I'd go to a parts store and try to find a replacement fitting. They should be able to come up with something.

110 and 111 seem to have different clutch slaves (completely) from what I have found. 111 seems to have very early, middle, and late, with middle replacing very early and I'm not sure about late. I'm going to order a new one and hope that the threads match the hose...

For now I have stolen the slave cylinder from the 1960s parts car (which is dreadful) and it all works. I'll order a new one and see if the threads from the hose fit directly.
