W108 - 1972 280SE 4.5 - Rear Speakers Size

Hi guys,

I'm buying new ones and I'm trying to avoid having to remove the rear speakers just to measure them. Does anyone know what size they are?

You have to be careful with speakers for Mercedes of this era. The size, which I think are 5x7, is one thing but the mounting holes are another and Mercedes used a non-standard bolt hole pattern for their speakers. This also applies to the 123 cars.

About the only way to be sure the speakers you get will fit is to remove one and measure not only the speaker cone size but also the distance between the bolt holes. And due to the age of the car you also might run into a situation where a previous owner has already drilled new holes and installed newer speakers.

Removing them is easy if a PO has not reinvented the way the factory speakers were mounted.

Idle, thanks for the info. These look original. I'm gonna remove them in the morning and measure then.

It is worse than that. 3x10s were in the rear. Either one in the middle, or two.

You can see the knock-out pattern from below, under the hat shelf in the trunk area.

Here's a little more info: W108 – Hat Shelf Speakers | MBCA Hawaii Section

That must have been what I was thinking about when I was talking about PO modifying the speaker holes.

The 3 x 10 might still be available but the selection would be, I would think, quite limited. Perhaps there is an adapter kit that allows the use of different size speakers?

Hey guys,

Just a quick correction. I took out the rear speakers today. Without a doubt, mine are OEM and they are not 3x10's. They are 3.5" x 8" to be exact. However, Retrosound's 4x8" speaker will fit in there perfectly. I took all the measurements and looked at the Retrosound diagram. It all matches.

I haven't been able to find other 4x8" speakers online. None, nada, zip.

My next step is to see if I can find 4x6" speakers that fit the opening and match the holes so I can get a better speaker than Retrosound's (they don't have good reviews online) and at a cheaper price (they're outrageously expensive!! $115!!).

If anyone wants to see the ton of pics I took today of the rear and front speakers, look in this folder on Dropbox.

I'll keep y'all posted on my progress.

Jose

Pretty cool. Your grilles do look "shorter/wider" than mine which look "longer/thinner", and there are several different knock out holes in the steel that you can see underneath.

You can certainly "bottom-mount" a set of speakers that are close enough in size to mount, and the sound will come through those holes and grilles just fine. Just mount them from below instead of dropping in from above, and it makes your options that much easier.

I've got 6.5" rounds, since that was the size of hole the PO cut in the deck, but no one can tell that the sound is coming through the trim material and the grilles are for decoration (or period correct look) only.

Whatever works without making it look like a Honda Civic, I guess?
