Euro cams & ecu change in a 450 slc

Gentlemen I found a euro 1976 450 SE @ the local pick n pull. It is bad rusty, but I was able to get the window switches & hazard switch & they work. I've got a pair of 225 hp euro cams & was hoping the ecu out of the euro 450se would make this work. By the way the headlights are complete & not broken but look rusty. The bumpers look o k , but again rusty. I am going to run a compression test. The odometer reads 37 K & other than it being a "Fred Flintstone" car it is complete & clean.
Any sound advice on the possibilites of this working or any other parts improve the performance of my 1980 450 SLC is apreciated.
Thanks Sincerely
Rev. Buzz

If you can obtain an ECU from the subject 450 SE, let us know the part no.

I assume both car use K-Jetronic injection? If so, you might want to get the fuel distributor and control pressure regulator from the donor car too, then it will be all Euro spec. I do not know which ones of those would be different from the US version, but my guess would be that all of them would be different.

Cam codes

Hi Rev,
Did the doner cams come from a hydraulic cam engine? Insure you get the matching rockers. What is the code from the back of the cams? It will be something like 00/01 or 06/07.

A K-Jetronic hasn't the ECU.

Ah, forgot about an US-ver. with emission control and it's ECU.

But euro 450 with 217 PS/225 PS K-Jet engine do not need any ECU.
And only euro 450 SE with D-Jet have ECU.

IIRC, 73-75 are D-Jet with mechanical rocker studs. 76+ are K-Jet with hydraulic rocker studs. It looks like, in your profile, you have a K-Jet so not an issue there. NO ECU swap should be needed since there is none, but you'd want to grab the entire matching head assembly, it's almost surely a higher compression head and the heads to match those cams and get the most power are your best bet.

If it has EFI it's actually a 75 with D-Jet and you can swap the heads and cams still but may need to make other modifications to get your K-Jet setup to work, unless you want to swap yours to D-Jet or Megasquirt it.

The other thing to consider is that the US 450 motor has an 8:1 compression ratio vs close to 9:1 for the Euro version. This may affect the way the camshafts work. On a K-jet, it may increase backflow at lower rev which may mess up with the air sensor plate. On a D-jet the ECU may have a hard time having the engine run right unless you go for a programmable system like Megasquirt.

I upped the compression on my 4.5 with 3.5 heads. The ECU wasn't the issue (I had a 3.5 one I could have used but did not). I used the 3.5 cams but in hindsight I'd probably stick to the 52/53 4.5 cams. I suggested the heads for the compression boost to match the cams
