Was passenger rearview mirror standard?

Hi guys,

Was the passenger rearview mirror standard on 72/73 W108s? I'm looking at a 1972 280SE 4.5 that is supposed to be pristine, but its missing the passenger rearview mirror. I thought I'd check with you guys.

Thanks!

My '72 280 SE 4.5 has no passenger side mirror. The car was purchased new by my parents, shows 58K on the odometer and has never been altered. If I remember correctly, a passenger side mirror would appear on a car's build sheet as a coded option. Also, period literature and sales brochures from M-B usually portray cars without a passenger side mirror.

It was an available option that needed to be ordered. I've added right side view mirrors to two of my cars and I will add one to my newest addition which is a W109. Here's one on ebay ...

Maybe it was just my mirror in particular and it was this same one from ebay when I mounted it I was unable to adjust it low enough (angle-wise) to see.

Make sure you're getting one with convex mirror....I'm not sure they all come that way.

These could be ordered from the factory or added at the dealer. This was common for all German cars at the time including Porsche and VW.

I don't remember the quoted price for a dealer added mirror but it was not cheap. The inside of the door, including the window regulator, the glass and the vent window crank regulator, as well as the vent window itself, had to be removed to install it.

Note the use of the words 'had to'. I am sure some have found a way to do this installation without removing everything, but if you were sold this by the dealer as an add on that was the way they did it at Van Winkle Mercedes in Dallas back then.

Became curious about mirror fitment so I consulted a contemporaneous M-B List of Codes for Special Versions (SA) and found, "50/2 Ausssenspiegel rechts" (Outside rearview mirror, on the right). This numerical code would have appeared as an option on a car's build sheet for any vehicle so equipped from the factory. Later dealer installation would, of course, always have been available and would not appear on the build sheet.

M car is a 1976 280C, which is newer than yours......no passenger mirror.

Correct me if I am wrong but this would be for RHD cars, such as UK or Aussie delivery, and not show on any US cars at the time - even special orders - because in the 70s, it was not even a thought on a safety-conscious buyer's mind.

My '72 280SEL came without one, but I added one. It came with a flat mirror, but I bought a replacement mirror glass for a Honda and had a glass shop cut it to the same size.
Even with the convex glass it's just a little better than nothing. I do have the problem of no being able to adjust it low enough.

Huh? I did not have to remove any of those to install mine.

Wow! I never thought I'd start a full-blown conversation on this. Guess, I'm gonna chime in. -- I asked the original question because my car came with a pax mirror. I guess it must have been installed at some point because it's not listed in the option list on the data card.
