instrument lights have no power 78 240D.
I'm fixing my Mother in Law's 1978 240D in preparation for sale, Anyone interested(4 speed!, Bellingham WA.).
Anyway, I don't have a wiring diagram......I'm having problems getting instrument and console lights to work. I have power at the switch, power at the fuse, but no power at the instrument panel. I originally thought it was the dimmer, but that's been by- passed and, of course, useless without juice.. Is the power wire the grey and blue one? What is it's path to the instrument panel? check for a good ground , check copper traces for continuity on the back of the dash pod

Since I received a lot of help lately, I can send you the diagram if you need. PM me your email.

I would be grateful for any clear diagrams regarding the instrument cluster, especially the plug. I can't get power to the positive terminal that lights the cluster. Ground is good and the cluster itself functions fine when I connect a separate power lead. No power is getting from the light switch to the plug. To make matter worse, I had the bright idea to split the 15 terminal plug apart. Wrong move....all the wires spilled out instantly and now I have no idea what wire goes where.
There are numbers on the plug, so I'm guessing all I need are the colors with the corresponding numbers. Has to match the wiring on a 78 240D. I found a list for an 84 300D....is that the same? #1 White w/blue stripe #2 Green no stripe #3 Blue w/ black stripe #4 Blue no stripe #5 Black w/ blue stripe #6 Blue w/ red stripe #7 Blue no stripe #8 Brown w/ red stripe #9 Empty, no wire #10 Brown w/ red stripe #11 Gray w/ green stripe #12 Gray w/ blue stripe #13 Black w/ green stripe #14 Black w/ white stripe #15 Brown no stripe Thanks Matt Last edited by mattcfish; 11-10-2014 at 01:55 AM. |

My FSM doesn't show colors. And it only is for the 114/115. Sorry about that, I thought I read 76.
I got an actual mb version FSM, digital copy, off eBay from a seller named "mbmanuals". He may email you what you need after purchasing to speed things up. As far as determining what wire is what, I would go through with a test light. Turn your blinker on, find it. Pop open the cluster and trace the circuits on the board to the corresponding pin, ie, look at the bulb for the corresponding blinker and connect the dots. For stuff like fuel gauge, disconnect at tank and look for continuity with a multimeter. As far as your original problem, that's odd. When you jumped it, was it for sure the right pin. And where did ground come from. On my 114 220D, it goes direct from the fuse to cluster. Granted, most of my stuff is mechanical. Best of luck, maybe someone will come through with a diagram. Kinda hard without it. And get to chasing your continuity to determine your wires. And get medical scissors to cut the covers off your harness, if it comes to it. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

This worked Perfect on my 1975 MB 450 SEL However was from a old Mercedes Body Repair Book dated 84 so if your wire Colors Match you may get lucky . Beyond that you can make a temporary jumper Loom from some Cluster wiring from a salvage yard . You Cut off a Salvage Cluster wiring as long as you can get it about 12 inches or so Then on the cut off and solder some Nails that well plug into the pin Connector Female End You Tape up the Metal of the nail not used to insert into the pin connector so they don't short out . The Idea is you try to find the right combination switching wires back and forth until each gauge ,turn signal works . Its a hard road and if your not careful you well brake loose the solder where the wires set inside the 15 pin connector . Also if your spedo Cable is tight to the Cluster is a disconnect down at the floorboards i thing so you can connect the spedo more easily at least is that way on a 75 450 SEL Model Sedan I think this may work if the colors match , Look for the 2 Gray / Purple. green and the Gray / Purple 14 and 15 as I remember some of the strips are tiny and you must twist the wires to see the strips . Reading Glasses well help also . The Gauges well not short out that I noted if you get it wrong by the way at least that never happened to me If this works your Lucky I read your Post lol and that I saved this Legend |
