Is it chrome or aluminum? I know the w123s were aluminum, and the clearcoat would oxidize.

That is a good question. i do not know. The bright work along the doors do look like they are oxidized. But beyond that i do not know..

If you need something quick try this...

https://www.birchwoodcasey.com/Refinishing/Wood-Finishing/Tru-Oil%C2%AE-Stock-Finish.aspx

It actually woks pretty nice on the aluminum trim around the windows. It doesnt last very long, maybe a month or two but in a pinch its great!

Stick a magnet on it to see if it's aluminum. My 70 220d is chrome.

I like mothers paste the best. But always a paste over liquid.

If it's really bad, they make some polishing pieces for a dremal

I checked last night and im thinking the trim along the windows is aluminum. it is more oxidized than ive ever seen on chrome and my magnet stuck very weakly to it (probably just pulling to the steel below), where as on the bumpers it nearly jumped out of my hand on to the steel.

Does anyone have any polishing tips for both? I have heard steel wool over and over but i also read that that fills gaps with iron and then leads to further problems with the chrome..
But im brand new to all this so all your guys help is so so much appreciated.

Mothers works good on aluminum too. I had aluminum rims once. It was a nightmare to keep them polished. But it pulled the oxidation right out. A tiny dremel polisher may be nice.

All that exterior trim is Anodized. to put it back to original requires sanding down, working out all dings/nicks, and filing sanding more then re anodizing, but why re anodize? if you sand it all down--why not just keep going down to 600 and then polish with jewelers rouge!

This guy sells a kit (and has a whole video on it):

Never used it, but appearently he has solved this problem?
