108/109 and 114/115 similarities
So I got into a benz without much research. I know, I'm a little young and stupid still.
I've contemplated putting mine on airbags after seeing some 108's online (loved them). However, I searched for 115's on bags and didn't like the look as much. Looks a little like an old toyota or Mazda. But these are just pictures so I couldn't really tell. I was at the gas station yesterday and finally saw a 108. He pulled up and we waved. He parked next to me and jumped out all excited, saw his wife rolling her eyes. Haha. Going over the cars the chassis looks really similar. I was in the next town over but he told me where his house was and said to stop by. Will do next time I'm over. After leaving I had a though. Are these the same chassis with a different front clip? Could I acquire 108 front fenders, hood, grill, etc and put it on my 115? I looked at some pics and these cars look the same on the doors back. I did notice a slight difference in the line between front fender and door, but just in pics. My front fenders have a little rust, and replacing would be easier. How cool would a 108/115 hybrid be with diesel and airbags? Years ago in California kids were taking an escalade front clip and putting it on their chevy trucks, not my thing but looked good. |

W108 and W109 interchange, W115 and W114 interchange, but they are completely different cars otherwise. That is, W108/W109 will not interchange with W115/W114. Well, maybe the radios and a few other universal bits will interchange....... Jim

I think that a 108 with 109 front end looks great.

W114 Coupe with W108 headlights. Also a V8 swap. |

Good observation. Both cars share the same designer, Paul Bracq. Little else will swap over, however. Totally different suspension, paneling, wheelbase, height, etc.

The rear end of the body looks identical. The fender lines look to match up.
How did those headlights fit? Was sheet metal work done? |

I have seen one example of a 115 with a 108 set of seats. I think some extra work was done to make the fronts fit but not much. The rear seat went in with just a bit of a pinch on the seat back. The bottom of the rear seat dropped right into place.
The owner wanted a full leather 108 interior in their 115. It only took a few minutes with a tape measurer to see that they would fit. There was also some discussion about the 108 brakes and discs bolting up but this did not turn out to be possible. He did find they would bolt up to a later Finback. |

The guy I ran into told me to stop by his house next time I'm in that town. I'll take a tape measure and some cardboard and see
My fenders are ok, might be easier to replace than fix. This would be the classic senario where I could buy 115 fenders and be good, or buy 108 fenders, hood, grill, lights, bumper, etc. Lol. The money pit gets deeper. |

Interesting modification. What was required to make the headlight switch? My recollection is that the bezels are not shaped remotely the same.

Wouldnt it be more cost effective to start over with a 108? I think by the time you did all this work, you could have sunk that elsewhere in a 108 and have it pretty cherry...

Well if the OP wants the economy of diesel with the appearance of W108... I have to say, 15 mpg in a 108 with premium does get a little pricey.

Engine swap time!
Whats the difference in mileage? My carbs are out of tune at the moment and Im getting around 14-15 so I'd assume at least 17ish tuned correctly

Ball park 6 cylinder gas = 13 - 19, 5 cylinder diesel = 22 -27, 4 cylinder diesel I don't know

35 mpg with 3.96 rear end. 3.69 rear end going in with hopeful 40 mpg.
Considering I have to pull my fenders anyways, it's the easier route for me. It could be done either way. I don't know enough about the rest of the 108 to determine an advantage. Other than you can get a 115 for under $1000 in good shape. |

I can't imagine the fenders being "plug and play". Perhaps they are but I seriously doubt it. Are you really getting 35 mpg? Have you checked your speedo for accuracy using a smartphone and GPS speed reader?
