Question Temprature Guage Flat-Lining

I have had my 1966 250S for a couple of years now and over the past 6 months I have been doing alot of things to restore it to former glory etc etc. One thing that I have never been sure how to fix is the temprature guage.

My guage sits on the 0 mark. It has always done this and the car runs just fine. I figured I would fix it when it becomes a problem. It's a problem now, if only in my head!

How do I fix this? I have checked the cable that goes from the dash cluster to the engine and it's entact but in pretty poor condition. Should I just replace this cable?

Or could it be something that needs fixing in the dash cluster?

I figure I should do it now as I have the dash apart for a wood restoration.

Would really appreciate some advice.

Thanks

Frank

Frank,

You will need to order a new cable/gauge assembly. It only comes as one piece and is a bit pricey, maybe around $150. The cable is filled with mercury and must not be kinked or else it will impair operation of the gauge. When replacing it, unscrew the temp sender from the head, plug the opening (or else you'll lose coolant), pull the cable through the firewall (there will be extra cable in there, just keep it wound up--remember, NO kinks). Remove the cluster, disassemble the left binnacle and remove the gauge and replace it with the new one. Proceed vice-versa for installation. Good luck. Everything is still available from MB.

Have you checked the temp sender itself? Possibly it is crudded up inside the head and requires cleaning/decontamination.

Douglas,

I didn't think to clean out that part of the temp line, I did disconnect it for a moment and the green coolant came out quite freely. This coupled with the fact that the Temp line has more kinks in it that a bowl of spaghetti leads me to concur with Aaron. I think the whole thing needs replacing.

I am dredding the pull-apart of the dash cluster, I have it out but have not worked out how to disconnect the line yet. I will tackle it this weekend.

Thanks for your reply.

Cheers,
